I just got a new boat about a 3 weeks ago and I took her our for her maiden spearing trip just over 10 miles off the coast of port Aransas Texas yesterday... to my amazement and luck I stumbled onto a large floating seaweed mass about a 1/2 mile in size and decided to forget the rigs and try for some triple tail and dorado. I left my large floats in the boat, along with my breakaway tips.... I was in the water no longer that 10 minutes when I saw something huge moving off to my left and coming my way fast, I turned and found myself looking at the largest blue marlin I have EVER seen (I work on private fishing boats that target bill fish) and all I could do was sit there and watch this once in a life time fish cruise curiously around me coming as close as 2-3 foot away at times!!!! after about 3 minutes of watching him and knowing I didn’t have the right equipment. I went back to the boat slowly to try to switch out, seeing the fish wasn’t spooked and didn’t seem to be going any where anytime soon. I got my stuff and was back in the water as fast as I could. but he was gone. :waterwork
I saw 3 more billfish after him, I was ready but they all stayed at a safe distance. I have only seen billfish two other time while spear fishing and in one dive I saw 4 (3 sail fish 1 marlin)!! I hope they stay in the aria at these concentrated numbers! I’m going back out tomorrow and again with some friends on the 27-28 so wish us luck!
and if any of you have tips for bill fish please let me know.
peace and good luck,
MSGT Murphy
