With the season starting in only a month I am about to purchase my first gun. I plan on hunting Striped bass and other mid sized fish off the New Jersey Coast, and was wondering if a 48, or 55 inch Mahogany AB Biller gun with a reel would be up to the task. I cant really afford a much more expensive rifle, but is this the right gun for my situation or should i consider a european style gun for the bad vis, or pneumatic or just a different manufacturer. I would prefer to stay wooden and banded but if its not the right gun for the job then it would just be a waste. Please let me know any thoughts you have, it would be really appreciated.

There are not many NJ hunters on this board, but many european "bass-in-shallow-and-not-too-clear-water" experts. The average main gun used by most of them for bass (or I should say us) is a 90cm euro (european size: 90cm is the length of the barrell).
How much is your budget deadline?

Everyones been telling me the same actually about the Euros, but for some reason i can't get it through head because I had wanted to use only wooden guns. So as far as that goes im undecided. As far as budget I was hoping to get a complete rig: Gun, line, reel, shaft, float line, the whole nine yards for under $500

So far what ive considered is a 48 inch or 55 inch Mahogany Biller which is like $270, with break away rockpoints, a biller reel with 300 or 400 lb mono, and a 30ft float line to run up to my dive float. Figure ill start hunting off Jeddis and in the surf and move out from there as I get better. I feel like ive really researched my options but with my purchase right around the bend i wanted some last minute advice before i plopped down the cash.

from what i know about nj those guns will be a bit large. You may want a 38 inch amrican type gun or a 82 cm euro. any of the better euros will be an improvement over that biller. you will want a 50' float line over the 30' as you start to dive deeper you will want the slack so the float is not pulling your gun around at depth. what end of the sate are you hunting?
