What is the range of a 36" AB Biller?
it has the 2 black rubber bands that came with it. I'm guessing 5/8"

thanks

Im lookin into gettin a 48 inch Biller and if i recall right it may even be like 10-12ft for the 36 or the 42. For a few extra bucks I just felt better getting a longer rifle I could always put on one band but ya cant add length - Chris

The rule of thumb is 4 times the lenght of the gun for "real" range in those short guns. That gun is good for reef and cave hunt. You can increase range and penetration power a little by shortening the bands, or switching to a thicker band. You can also add lenght buying a longer barrel and longer shaft. Or you can try making a longer barrel yourself. Good luck.

cool, thanks.

I'm in New York and am thinking that given the visibility around here, a longer gun may be at a disadvantage. but then again, I've only been diving a few times and haven't fired a speargun yet, so I'm far from an expert.

Is a 48" gun still useable on the average-low visibility days?

thanks,
beero

Ill find out in a month or so, Ill let ya know. My hope is that a 48 is good for tight areas near jeddis and also for distance when i need it. Itll be my first speargun so im guesstimating. But then again ive been polespearing for a while so even if it doesnt shoot far, its more fun to stalk anyways. If you find anything bout the Biller that might interest me let me know before i throw down the cash. Thanks- Chris

I used a 36" gun for awhile with two short 5/8" bands. The effective range really depends on what type of tip you're using and what type of fish you want to spear. With a screw on, twin barb rock point, my realistic range was just a bit less than two spear lengths or 6' from the muzzle of the gun, and that was for smallish rockfish. Beyond that, the shaft slowed to the point where the tip wouldn't penatrate much of anything. I tried to keep my shots to within 4' of the gun muzzle. Bottom line with that type of setup is that if you want more range, you need a longer gun.
Ron.
