and to answer your question Adam, IPA is an acronym - how appropriate for

the International Phonetic Alphabet. An internationally used system of symbols for representing pronunciation. IPA also refers to the symbols themselves.

Correct KP. When I was studying linguistics I had to know enough to translate english text. I can't say I mastered it, but it is useful to know when reading a dictionary.
