Hello

I have recently become interested in freediving, I have done a bit of research but have the following questions

- What is purging?
- Can the top athletes hold there breathe longer in water as opposed to land
- Where can I get those hydrodynamic weights for dynamic's

I can do a dry hold of 5'12 but a dynamic swim of juct 50m NF this is probably because of not being relaxed due to a busy pool and trouble staying under, my in pool statics are pretty low too, any help?

I havent done any proper training just biking to work most days and been using the pool for swimming and the odd dynamic 2-3 times a week for the last 3 weeks, is my above efforts any good?

ps I always have a spotter in the pool

Hey MaT

I hate to answer these questions as you may think I actually know something, but in all honesty was asking the same about 2 years ago ;)

in any case, I'm all you got, so here goes:

- What is purging?
It is a fancy word for Hyperventilation, i think, ie PURGE your body of CO2. Purging is OK in very few cases, done by very few atheletes, so unless you know exactly how/when/why to do it, don't. Look up hyperventilation here, there is a ton of info. 1 st thing to learn is why having too lower CO2 is bad.

- Can the top athletes hold there breathe longer in water as opposed to land

Yes, in most cases, because: a. allows total relaxation that is hard to achieve without floating (case of statics) and b. that being in water instills the mammalian dive reflex (look that one up here too)

- Where can I get those hydrodynamic weights for dynamic's

a nice thing about freediving is that many cool things are still DIY realm. Look into making a neck weight here. They are lead shot, a couple of old bike innertubes and a rucksack type clip.

5,12 and 50M DYF is very GOOD!

Try to find a swim club or freedivers who train near you, there are some great freedivers in your area.

good luck

Thanks for the advice,

how much weightshould I start off with I am 78kg and 5'9 with no wetsuit?
do most divers use neck weights alone or a combination of neck and waist?
could you get the lead shot from a gun shop if a dive shop isnt available?

big lungs? heavy bones?

Do you struggle a lot? I weigh 72Kg (these days, whoops) and am 5,10 and find 1.5 to 2Kg's fine. no suit. I Don't pack, but some days I am more buoyant than others.

A *very* elastic rubber weight belt with smaller leads is great, so is a neck weight, maybe the latter is more comfortable but the former does balance nicely if you have "floaty legs".

Where to get shot? Shooting shops. Dive shops (cut the bags open). call around.

I find I have to stroke much more ( I dont use fins) often then the top guys do (youtude vids) to stay down which cuts my glide time, I tried packing once and it made it worse (negated any benafit) and in a salt water pool (soon to become my local pool) it feels like half my energy goes to staying under.

Im medium build I assume ive got a decent set of lungs but never measured my capacity would like too though would I have to go to a doctor?

no fins dynamic is very technical, every little thing counts. it takes a bit of practice to get a decent style going, the whole bringing hands forward and kick in particular. just try to remember to glide and hold a streamlined position. watch the youtube vids carefully and ull pick it up.

in terms of weight everyone is different. im not sure about salt water but if u cant try anyone else's to get an idea maybe start with 3 kilos? i wear weight around the neck only which is fine for most ppl, if u wear a suit then put some around the waist as well. packing should b done with care and only start out with 1 or 2 packs and raise the number slowly each week. u will float more with packing and as ur lungs expand and grow from this over time u will b able to store more air and will need to wear more weight(which is also a good thing because it adds more momentum).

remember to always have a buddy with u wen doing anything in the water.

hope this helps
