Aerobic/Anaerobic

Some questions about training. I assume that aerobic training increases the overall efficiency of the metabolosim and anaerobic training does the same thing but at a faster rate. Many moons ago, when I ran cross country in high school or training was almost exclusively anaerobic. This made it much easier to run in races in O2 debt during the last mile or two.
