Anyone spear on alderney? Am guessing all the usual species apply, and perhaps a strong chance of a good flatty. Looking to travel next year for a holiday with family.

You will need a speargun licence in Alderney, if you arrive at the airport with a speargun you will be arrested!
A few UK spearos including a lady all got arrested two years ago!
I don't think it is difficult to get one though?
Anyway why don't you come to the 'Guernsey fish in' instead much more fun than Alderney :)

Seems like all of the Channel Islands have separate laws! Thanks for the heads up though.

Yes well in theory Alderney is overseen by Guernsey's government & come under our bailiwick as are Herm & Sark.
Jersey is independent to our laws & have their own government.
I believe the speargun restriction is due to a personal attack on a policeman about 10 years ago when a man armed with a loaded speargun was holed up in a house!
But in answer to your question - Alderney has some great fishing but as elsewhere, the island has suffered from overfishing.
Only 10 years ago Alderney was possibly the best shore fishing venue in the UK & the boat fishing was second to none.
However the banks have been hammered by commercial fishermen & the shore netted to oblivion.
Largely by English boats but French & jersey have had their share too & of course Guernsey trawlers & long liners visit most days of the year!
Not all doom & gloom though as there are still fish to be caught.
It is a quaint little island although a bit barren & very bleak in the winter, lots of reminders left from the SWW with lots of fortifications to explore.
There is quite a French influence, not surprising as on a clear day it looks like you could hit France with a well aimed stone.
However if it rains there ain't much to do!
I have had some great times in Alderney & some pretty depressing wet weather times too.
Perhaps the best time to visit would be during Alderney week as the population double & the whole place becomes a bit more alive.
