Alghero, Sardinia, in August

Hi!
A friend and I are going to Alghero at Sardinia in august this summer and we are planning to do some scuba diving during our vacation.

I have seen that there are several diving centers to go diving with. But is there any non-commercial diving club - just people who likes diving and does it for a hobby - that we could go with instead? My experience is that it´s more fun to go diving with locals than with turists.
We are also interested in spearfishing and freediving.

If not, whick diving centers would you recommend in Alghero?

I don't know any non-commercial clubs in Alghero, but I can recommend the dive centres Blue Services (based on the Lido) and Capo Galera (out near Lazzaretto beach). I think Capo Galera also do some apnea. There are other dive centres that operate out of the harbour in town, but I don't know very much about them. Make sure you do Nero Cave (beneath Grotto Nettuno) which is an awesome dive - the best in Alghero. To freedive you probably need to go off Capo Caccia or Punta Giglio for some depth, or south around La Speranza. Have fun!
