Hey just joined here and hope to learn about "spearo" I'm just starting out. I'm currently working on my breath hold time.
I started practicing about a week ago. I could barely do a min. but I'm currently up to a personal best of 2:30.

So far I purchased my gear.
-3mm 1pcs. camo wetsuit
-hood
-gloves
-booties
-Omer millenium fins
-Cressi Big Eye evolution mask
-AQA snorkel
-Rife 50" mid handle gun
-Hawaiian sling
-float, tag line, flag
-dive knife
-dive watch

I still need a weight belt and weights. (I'm not sure how to determine how much weight I need?? Does anyone know how to figure this out?

Any way hope to learn things here.

Mahalo for any advice!

Welcome from Texas! Weights depend on how bouyant your body, wet suit and gear might be. As a rule most of us strive for neutral bouyance at 20 feet. Get in the water and experiment.

Take a freediving course. You'll learn not only how to adjust your buoyancy but also proper safety protocol. Too many spearos die from lack of understanding on basic safety.

Hey thanks for the advice!
I grew up practically living at the beach. I dove for Tako and fish using a sling almost every weekend to collect bait for Ulua fishing. But not deeper than 6' to 10'. I'm also CPR qualified.
But this diving with a gun is new to me. Also the need to go down 30'+ to shoot fish will be a new experience for me. We never used wetsuits and belts. Just a mask, snorkel, and a set of fins.
It's been years since I moved to Oahu from Maui. (about 20 yrs) since I dove.
I work out, I'm 5'7", 190 lbs. not ripped, but I wouldn't consider my self over weight. I'm trying to get my weight down to 170's.

I currently use "Ultrabreathe" to help strengthen my lungs. I don't drink or smoke. (Quit about 7 yrs. ago) So hopefully it won't take me too long to improve my breath holds.

Anyways, Thanks for the advice! I'll see if I can find a good freediving course. Maybe there's a good instructional video?
