Last Sunday, Glennon and the YMCA volunteers put on the Aloha State Freediving Games again, at the Kona pool. Half of the twelve entrants had never competed before and half were safety divers at the Pacific Cup. The five divers from the spear fishing group posted some respectable scores, led by the ageless Sonny Tanabe (a 65+ legend in Hawaii), who finished third in dynamic.
Yours truly took his best shot at beating Deron and ended up a little short. Deron hasn't been training since Cyprus and wisely posted a very conservative (for him) static time.
The best part of the day came when they announced the scores. In spite of the fact that they spent a lot of their preparation time helping the new competitors, Matt and Annabel Briseno not only won the male and female static and dynamic, they finished in a tie for overall.
All in all, a fun day in paradise. Many thanks to the Kona Family YMCA and the workers at the Aquatic center.
