I recently made an Aluminum stringer. I couldn't find a piece of stainless to use and I was too cheap to buy a stringer from the dive shop for $21; it cost me $2.50 to make :). Anyway, I know that aluminum is a toxic metal (Don't cook pasta sauce or soup in an aluminum pot:naughty; don't weld aluminum without special precautions,:naughty etc...) Also I have never seen an aluminum stringer for sale. What I'm wondering is whether putting the aluminum spike through the fish will pose some sort of health risk. I assume the short term exposure of the fish to the metal will not be a problem, but I've noticed a lot of people on this forum have some medical expertise (I'm a law student so obviously I have none:duh) and I was hoping someone with actual knowledge could help me. Sorry if this is a stupid question but better safe than sorry. :head

I always wear a condom when I'm welding Aluminium :)

Seriously just go for it, it's unlikely to do you any harm and since you string it through the head as a rule unless you eat that there wouldn't be a problem anyway :)

Agreed.

Unless you have major aluminum oxide on your poker and it gets into your fish. But even then its not that big of a deal. Just avoid the fumes as much as you can. I use an aluminum stringer myself. I use a tent stake that i drilled a hole in, and some cable with ties on it. It doesnt corrode that much. Im more worried about my lead weights in my belt bangin against the fish while i swim around.

Just wing it dude. Seriously, whats the worst that could happen?(Guinea Pig) just call me and tell me to stop using mine if you die.

thanks guys. You got it riffehunter, I'll leave a note with my next of kin to notify you in the instance of my untimely death. :blackeye

Actually, aluminum and the standard fish sized dose of mercury go VERY nice together. Just a wee bit tangy if you add some cadmium!rofl

i want to ask a quistion and i hope im not interaupting

usualy i use hoop(circular) stringer

i dont know how to use line stringer but her in saudi arabia
people just tie one end to belt and leave the other end free

but i believe this is not right

please can someone explain by simple language and pictures if possible

and which is better between the two types of stringers and why

Aluminium poisonous? Really? Is that why Coke & Pepsi put all their soft drinks in aluminium cans. Factory cooked easy meals & Chinese take-aways come in aluminium. Heck, we even wrap the Sunday roast & bass in it. The British army still use alumimium canteens for cooking & eating (mind you our govt. doesn't seem to care much about them). Aluminium sulphate to treat ulcers? Anti-perspirants?

I've only heard of a tenuous link with Alzheimers. Heard one theory that maybe it had something to do with underarm deodorant. Sounds a bit of a stretch but who knows.

It might corrode in the sea if it is not anodized; aluminium naturally forms a protective oxide layer in air, anodizing increases that protective layer. I'd be more worried that it might not be strong enough - modern aerospace alloys seem pretty tough though.

It will for the fish!:D

Hey, we need lawyers too! You should definitely read this book: Letters to a Young Lawyer by Alan Dershowitz - it's amazing how many attorneys end up on the wrong side of the law.

Hmm I cook most of my fish in aluminum frying pans! (Delia recommends them)

We just realized here in the US that non-stick teflon pans emit carcinogens when heated up. And, I don't know about deodorant, but my relatives who have kicked from alzheimers prefered a 12 or more of crappy american brew in cans every day of the week:friday
