ambejacks- yellow jacks

went out spearfishing today off key west, we went about 10 miles out, in about 60 ft of water on the outer bar, past western dry rocks. the water is cold still at 71 deg. i was wearing my 3mil shorty under my 3mm open cell oceanos suit. i was warm in that, but the ride home was cold. vis was shitty, less than 30ft most of the day, it varied. sometimes i could see bottom . we just kept drifting over the same rocks all day, boat would rop us off , then pick us back up when we drifted off it. the fish were EVERYWHERE!! schools of big amberjack and yellow jack cruising, plus lots of undesirables, like chubs and small yellowtail. but the water was boiling on this spot with baitfish all day! birds diving and crashing all day. we were hoping for kinfish, but with the 4 ft rolling waves and 15mph winds,(was supposed to be 10) we didnt want to go deep so we stayed above some rocks on the outer reef bar. i got the ambejack diving down to the bottom. i saw them cruising slowly along the bottom at about 50ft. i was at midwater already when i saw them, no time to go up to take a breath,(and i am NOT the greatest freediver, not by a long shot) but i turned and took an interception course, there were three, they looked to be around 20 lbs and 36" or so. i dove down and as i got on their level, approx-40ft deep they turned, giving me a good shot. i was shooting my big 4 band wahoo gun w/ breakaway, so i easily made the 15 ft shot, well it was more like 20ft shot and the fish was more like 35#, so i didnt stone him and was fighting it for the camera for a while, ny er shot him a second time then while i was untangling myself from three floatlines ny -er stabbed it in the head, he bled out with ALOT of blood,,(i dont mean to sound morbid or blood thirsty) he looked like a submarine spewing smoke or something,(if submarines COULD spew smoke) pretty cool sight , i gotta get some of that footage, these guys got some cool footage. he weighed out at 34lbs gutted,(and those fish got ALOT of guts!, i found a 10" 3/4 decomposed fish in him. NASTY!!i cant wait till summer!!! this wind is killing me!

Great report mate, you are a lucky man to be able to complain about 15mph wind & 30' vis though.
Might have to pay you a visit....

ok i changed it for you, now you can take credit for stabbing my fish.i was just making a point about the blood, it WAS pretty cool the way he bled out huh? dont worry noone will ever see that video anyway. but rest assured if they do you will be the one featured, everyone will think it was yours. since you were the one stabbing it. you ARE pretty quick with that knife, better be careful you will stab yourself again. i stopped stabbing stuff after i stabbed myself in the wrist.

I should probably switch to just cutting the gills though, before I hurt myself again

it was a mess three float lines tangled, one hooked on the boat engine an aj with two shafts in him , both shots missed the vitals, and fish just going nuts

yeah i know, the amberjack was cool. i saw you stab one of those yellow jacks in the head and you moved FAST! i remember thinking, DANGER! i stabbed myself in the wrist one time, when i first got my omer laser. (that knife has a 7 inch blade, and i just wasnt used to one that long. i grabbed this red grouper HUGE RED ,(actually he was 24") but for this story , he was HUGE! i went to brain him with my right hand, while i was holding him through the gills with my left, the knife went through his head and into my wrist about1" deep, it bled alot and hurt ALOT! (and THAT is no exaggeration) it hurts right now from telling this story. the doctor told me i was LUCKY! an infection in that area could be a big problem. so i stopped stabbing stuff almost altogether. the gills is a good idea, but slow methodic style, those dive knives are sharp and your skin is so soft from the water, it cuts easy. thats why i made those kill spikes, i need to start using them again. i made some cool ones. i'll show you. if you want one i'll ggive you one, they are much safer i think, to brain fish with.

YEAH I DECIDED ONCE AND FOR ALL , I AM GOING TO MAKE A FLOAT where the float line goes seamlessly into the float, they always tangle on the tuna clips and connections
