'Wouldst thou' so the helmsman answered
'learn the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers
Comprehend its mystery!'

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-82)

i agree whole heartedly

I have ploughed over 70,000 miles of open seas with a tiller in my hand, spent over 400 nights on water and swam alone at the most remote places i could get to. I have endured the hardship as well as the splendor and through it all i have learned something about the sea, it is fragile in many ways. I am disheartened that so many others choose to ignore what is happening right before our eyes...

Here in California, there are no more old fish. The oldest 2 and 3 generations of virtually every resident specie of fish are gone and few seem to care. There is currently a proposal to create some no-take reserves around our local islands. That proposal was answered by the sportfishing community by a literal declaration of "war". That is when i quit the sport that had consumed my life for the previous 16 years. I gave away all of my gear, removed any vestages of fishing equipment from my skiff. I now freedive with my camera and my time on the water has never been more rewarding.

I always wonder if there are enough of us who love the sea for the beauty rather than the bounty to make a difference in the future.

Protect that which you value....

Brad
