Welcome to DB, Joao! What's your specialty? Freediving, scuba, spearing?

Welcome, from another seeker of nirvana! :) I like to dive both into water and into the Self...

Thanks for the reply. How is the water where your at? It seems there is nothing like pure breathhold when you are trying to purge the mind eh?

Pure freediving. I am Vegan as well so I dont really shoot anything. More into the amount of time I can stay under while enjoying the reef. There are so many cattle call dive boats here that I like to cruise up and go as deep as them!

thanks for the welcome!

hi joao

nice place roatan.. i was over there in 2005 doing my dm with pura vida in west end..

where's you fave spot then..? you are right about the dive boats.. there's loads now.. i suspect i would like freediving off west end wall.. some good depth there.

We prefer to dive on more of the east end, some real sneaky spots that are amazing. Since we are located that direction its nice to just paddle out!

Hi joao,

Roatan is one of the places on my list, but I've not yet found a good way to freedive it. A very experienced scuba diving friend used to say Roatan was the best diving he had ever seen. If a couple of pure freedivers were to show up down there for a week or so in early summer (before the hurricanes) what is available? Is a boat necessary? Where to stay that's reasonably cheap? Are there still fairly large areas of healthy reef, especially acropora?

Connor

Roatan is a great place. It's not really set up for freediving ,but thats never stopped us. As far as a boat, it is mandatory for the east end as its difficult to getto areas because of no roads. Most freediving can be done from shore with a little swimming. We prefer it as its a great workout. Most of the reef is 3 to 10 meters with drop offs everywhere. As for the the elkhornes there are plenty and stunning, But if everyone keeps treating this place like a cruise ship terminal I just keep my fingers crossed and do everything we can to educate and protect. We are in the process of finishing our little Eco paradise. It will be for more "holistic" sport and adventures. Please stay in touch and we would be more than happy to show you around!

Hi Joao,

I'm vegan myself - what's Roatan like for vegan food?

Sounds like a cool place to dive!

John.

The Vegan choices are not the greatest. Everything needs to ship in so it's kinda expensive. But as you know its worth it! :)

so how about a freedive get together there in a couple of months? I'm tired of seeing all these great get togethers in Europe: too far and too expensive, but I'd certainly go for a week or so to "central" america. What do you think Joao? Connor?

Would love to host a freedive gathering.I am hoping we will be in a position to house everybody on our property. We are building a true eco resort(solar power, sistern water, composting etc). Lets try to figure this out.

Great Joao. how close to the diveable water are you and when will your place be ready? Do you have the google earth link to your area?

This year for me is pretty booked. I'm thinking about summer 2009.

Connor
