Another one in Cornwall

Hi All,

Another poster from Cornwall, UK. I live in St Austell. I do scuba occasionally but generally prefer to freedive/snorkel.

Anyhow I have just bought myself a speargun (for some reason I find this sentence to be very satisfying). I have now got most of the kit together and am itching to give it a go. I will probably brave the cold water as soon as conditions are good and I have the free time. Any recommendations for good local spots would be appreciated.

Other than that I expect I will lurk around the forum for a bit, hoping to pick up tips and hopefully getting to know some of you better in the process.

If you haven't found it already there is a Cornwall thread in the UK and Ireland section of the International Buddy Network and Trip Report. There is a wealth of info here, I'm sure you'll find it and the other members as useful and friendly as I have.

And yes, owning a speargun is VERY satisfying (even more so when you start catching fish with it!!)

Hi PhilH, the other one from Cornwall here. I'm new to this lark too, got my gun at christmas and still after my first fish. Was in near Moushole today and saw a good sized fish in the kelp but had the safety on and ran out of air flapping trying to get it off! Haha, can't get much more newby than that!

Thanks to all for your comments so far. I'm steadily working my way through some of the beginner threads and Cornwall threads trying to pick up some tips.

I figure I will probably venture out on my own at some point so that I can get comfortable with the kit and have a few practice shots (hopefully at some fish).

Vis was about 3m I'd say (Moushole, 2hrs into falling tide), although my vis'o'meter is yet to be calibrated so that's a total guess!

Think I'm in the same boat as you, trying to get in as much as possible so I'm comfortable with my setup by the time the fish arrive. So many bits of kit, so many things to learn. Today was the first day I felt truly comfortable with my new weights. I've had too little weight, too much weight, weight belt bra syndrome, sore thighs from weights and that's just the weight related list! Float line was another one to crack but feeling like fish no.1 is only a matter of time now!
