Hi everyone!

Been signed up for while now, but I thought I'd say my first proper hello to this awesome forum. I'm from Perth, Western Australia, so it's the Indian Ocean that I spend my time in.

Anyone else in the Indian?

Cool!

G'day mate,

Yeah there's a few aussies lurking around here. If you're lucky you might get a couple of WA fellas coming out of the woodwork too.

What sort of diving do you do over there - freediving, scuba, spearing? I can probably point you to some people if you're looking for some buddies - I think there's a few in Perth and I know Bunbury's got plenty too.

Cheers mate,
Ben

Thanks BennyB, good to hear from you.

I'm into freediving and spearfishing at the moment (gidgees a lot of the time around Perth) and I upgrade to a gun on the bigger trips (Abrolhos was great!). I find I see a lot more when I've got a spear, even if I don't shoot everything that moves. I'll do my scuba ticket soon too, I think, just to open my options a bit more. Maybe make a living of it.

Would love to know about buddies in WA, seeing as most of my mates consider me shark bait. So long as it isn't too much trouble.

Not from WA yourself then?

Thanks mate.

Hi AJ, welcome to db.
Yes we have a few active Aussies around...shot anything nice lately?

Thanks foxfish.

I fear I'll be speaking double dutch with WA fish names. We don't even agree on names between states in Australia. But I'll throw some out there anyway.

I've been confined to shooting dhufish bait for some months (for my less enthusiastic buddies) and obligingly diving to check out ground for western rock lobster pots (though I think the amateur season is over now). Back in April though I had a great trip to the Abrolhos (an archipelago and the southern most coral reef in the Indian Ocean). Huge numbers, species and sizes of fish all in 7 metres of warm water. Shot a couple of nice black snapper, a good baldchin groper, but fell short of my goal to nail a nice coral trout. Huge fiasco with a hastily restored and ancient speargun found in a neighbour's junk pile. It shot a foot low at 5 or 6 metres! Never again.

Since then I've been making do with a home made pole spear and a gidgee (pranga) on whiting, herring and flathead. Mostly though, I've been focusing on my freediving skills. The premier eating fish of the region (the wa dhufish) lives in caves down at 30m and gets up to 40 pounds. That's where I'm headed...eventually. :D

Maybe ask again same time next year.;)

hey mate

I'm a sydney spearo. Would absolutely love to make a trip over to WA sometime, but well, you know how far it is! But anyway, welcome to DB and good luck with your freediving.

Thanks yugyug. Easy to forget that east to west is 3 and a half thousand kays away ('bout 2500 miles in the old scale). I'd love to get over to the east coast and work my way up sometime.

I'll keep an eye out for ya.

If you're on Facebook search for the West Coast Mantas Freediving group, Jasmine & Co will point you in the right direction.

Cheers,
Ben
