I was wondering if any one has ever tried freediving there. I've never been and was wondering if it was worth going.

Thanks,
Billy

The Itchetuknee is a great snorkeling spot. At the head of the river isa spring that is fun to freedive in. There is a strong 70F flow coming up out of it but you can freedive down and into the cavern and it is beautiful.
People typically float down the river on inner tubes. It is absolutely crystal clear and it is as if you are floating in air rather than water. Consider wearing a full 3mm suit. I'd rent an inner tube which many vendors in the area supply. That way you can have a place for your lunch, get out of the water, etc.
The bottom of the river has a lush carpet of aquatic grass. There is a lot of life including turtles, many species of fish, crayfish, and even some alligators. I think they may remove the largest of these, but if my memory serves we did see a rather good sized one back in a still area which was removed from the main flow.
There are numerous springs that you can visit when you go to the itchetucknee. At least one of them will allow you to do a 60' vertical freedive down a chasm to where the scuba divers move beyond.
I would definately recommend heading out to central florida to snorkel and freedive the springs. Bring a wetsuit.

Blue Hole is an excellent freedive (and pretty much the only spring to freedive on the Ichetucknee). Worth the trip and while you are in the area, you should hit Troy, Orange Grove Sink, the Ginnie Springs group and too many others in the area to name. Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks,

Scott
