I'm just getting into the sport and am looking for a way to improve safely. Im looking for a class that focuses on safety and not as much pressure on performance. Do yall have any ideas? i live in Louisiana and would love to find one nearby.

Good question, thood. I'm in Tallahassee and I've been looking also. It looks like the closest is the SE FL coast. Most FII charge $279-295 (but also figure in ~$120 in boat fees for two days' dives, regardless). FII instructor Jonathan Dickinson of Scubaworks in Jupiter, FL charges $345. PFI is $345 across the board, again plus ~$120 to boat fees.

There's a growing demand from the spearos in the Tampa (and surrounding) area, so hopefully there'll be a PFI or FII instructor popping up there. It's only a matter of time. There's a lot of these gulf spearos concentrated on spearfishingplanet. I've noticed they're trying to get a group together for a PFI or FII instructor to travel to the Tampa area. For FII, there's a max of 8 per group and a minimum of 6 IIRC (PFI vs. FII differs). I figure they've possibly got enough for two groups, but if the second group is smaller, maybe there's room for more? They're thinking/planning FII instructor for $295ea (vs. PFI for $345ea). Keep in mind, these are experienced spearos and they're just wanting the basic course. (PFI Intermediate is 4 days/$595 and I've seen some wish they'd taken the basic first.)

A thought: It doesn't matter how far away an instructor is coming from (San Diego or Miami), as the price is about the same, regardless. Besides, some of these guys are big names, like Mark Lozano, for instance.

Instructor lodging can be taken care of. Agreed-upon scheduling for all involved seems to be the "only" big item to nail down. I say "only", because it seems to be what these things hinge on, whether they work out or not. Obviously, having a full group of 8 to start with provides the instructor more $ AS WELL AS some amount of "insurance", as it seems there's always a flake somewhere, right?

Mark just came to Wisconsin and taught a class for us... it was awesome! If I was in your shoes, I'd get a group together and get in contact with him.
