Any negative side effects of apnea walks in the morning?

Hi all,

I was wondering if you know of any side-effects of regular
apnea walking. In particular, I try to do a 45-minute fast
walk every morning with controlled breathing, which lately
became apnea-walk. However I was concerned.. I have no
medical background, but the idea of starting my day with
long apneas and elevated CO2 in my body does not feel
very right. Any feedback on that?

how would it be any different than any other anaerobic work? maybe not fueling ur recovery right? dont see how it would be bad. on a side note if u have access to a steep hill a find all out prints uphill to the point of failure rest on walk back down/repeat more helpful than apnea walking

Thanks, you're right, it shouldn't be any different than any other anaerobic work and of course morning swims are okay.

Sorry, it's probably my English (not native) but I didn't get what you mean here ("find all out prints uphill").. Could you explain?

I think he meant "I find that all out sprints uphill to the point of failure" but of course I can't be sure.

I think the only serious effect of apnea walks in the morning would result if you passed out and fell down. There is an old hard core spearfisherman here in Southern California who actually did apnea runs on the soft beach until he passed out.

Wow.. No, I don't think I'll push it anywhere close to that,
although I'll enjoy a nice morning buzz sometimes

I can't imagine a better way to start the day! Just be careful not to push it if you are walking on a hard surface.

I think apnea walks do work. The best ones tend to vary speed and length.

Depends what you do later in the day to be honest. Definitely not recommended is doing any kind of Static or Freediving just after the apnea walks. Your stomach and diaphragm uses a lot of energy and you would probably reach not the same good results. Try to get a nice daily schedule where you have an (almost) empty stomach but still enough time to recover before you start any other freediving activity.

I am doing my master freediving course at Apnea Total at the moment, therefore I have best access to a lot of experience and knowledge I can ask the Instructors.

Thanks! I was not planning to do any freediving afterwards, I know this can be even dangerous after lots of dry training.

Why is it definitely not recommended?

What would be dangerous about it?

Don't expect some rigorous physiological explanation from me, maybe somebody else can elaborate. I do know though that extensive static or dry can give your body a hard time.. One of my instructors once had a blackout in a competition, he had a really good static time in the morning but he admits he pushed it a little bit. The same evening they had the dynamic competition, where he blacked out in the middle of his performance without "warning", he says. I know the guy is all about safety and stuff and he never blacked out before. He says that it must have been the morning static.

I also don't have the book by Pelizzari with me (manual of freediving - underwater on a single breath) but I remember that when he was talking about setting up an annual training schedule, he was suggesting that the months where the freediving occurs (e.g. summer), there's no other training whatsoever except the freediving itself. Then he introduces training (apnea running, dry apnea, swimming, etc) gradually, stops freediving and I think he peaks the training a couple of months before the freediving starts.

So it seems, no strenuous training *and* freediving at the same day (or period even?). That said, I'd leave it to the experts to confirm and/or explain more.

Exactly. Don't expect better results in the water after doing an intense set of apnea walks, that's it.

Depending on the level and what you are training for (e.g. Pelizzari has an individual training routine for the whole year you should try to get enough rest between the training and dives.

The way I do it at the moment:

  1. Waking Up
  2. Apnea Walk
  3. Series of Breath Training (Breath Up, Final Breath, Packing)
  4. BTV Training, Stretching
  5. Break of at least 1 hour
  6. Freediving

This is roughly the trainings schedule I follow. Is anyone interested to know the exact exercises I got told for everyone to try on their own? E.g. BTV Training, Packing Routines, etc. If so, I would be more than willing to write them down and share them with the community.

Ok, so actually theres no indications of it being dangerous, as I can tell...

And it's more like an advice; save your energy for the diving session....

I don't think it's beneficial to throw around warnings if not backed up by anything...

Anyone who'd be willing to share their apnea walk program/tables? Compared to your DNF/DYN max period (how long the dive takes), what is your max. a.w. time? I've started with a CO2 table: 80 paces and rests from 30 -> 5 seconds. What other exercises could I do?

It would be a good idea to start this on its own thread for the potential benefit of others who are looking for something like that.

My point was that my AIDA instructor claimed that because of his strenuous static in the morning, he blacked out in the middle (i.e. far away from feeling discomfort) of his dynamic in the evening. For me that's an indication that excessive training and freediving at the same day could be dangerous. However, as I already said, I'm not an expert so indeed that may not be the case. That's why I asked for confirmation once you expressed your doubt.
