Re: any news about banning spear fishing?

Welcome fishy25, try the Discussion link in my signature footer. There is a meeting in January. The EU Commissioner, Borg, said that they had no intention of banning anything new. Watch out for the Greens (English & Welsh, not Scottish) -- they are against hunting, fishing and just about anything green & wholesome it seems:(.

I never understand their logic.

I mean it is ok to longline, what this means for the fish is, there is a hook with bait, the fish eats the hook. And then it is stuck there alive on the hook for 2-3 days before they kill it.

That is of course way more humane than shooting it, and killing it within 30 seconds :(

Not forgetting the terrible effect long lines are having on albatross populations :(.

Brits, in general, tend to like & respect animals, but some of these animal rights folks do a lot of harm with their "good intentions". Releasing voracious non-native predators like mink into the wild was a classic example (a good reason to keep Otter Hounds). A colleague leant me a recently released humorous book called "How to be Right"* - which gives an interesting account of the RSPCA rescuing a crayfish & taking it to a crayfish preservation area -- unfortunately it was one of those big voracious, cannabilistic, plague-carrying (& darn tasty) American signal crays, which promptly erradicated all the native crayfish in the preserve. Classic. They say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

*My favourite entry in the above book is for Ted Heath (short & to the point:D), although my friend's favourite is the entry for the French (rather long).

Yes I agree.

It is sad that these "false enviro" people, are for the most part represented by city-folk with little to no understanding of the real nature. They do more harm than good. Because in the end, the corporate world thinks rightfully that they are just a bunch of young missfits.

I miss their focus on real disasters. But this is a never ending debate, we could discuss it to no end. But what are we going to do about it :)

Unfortunately the only "victories" environmentalists get are when the rally for a cause where the opposition is weak (a.k.a. does not have high paid lobbyists working with law makers). So banning long line fishing (not going to happen) but banning spearfishing, oh that's a horse of a different color. Unless public support really gets behind something (like banning shark fining) it is just incredibly unlikely that any big industry will be shoved aside to appease environmentalists.
The other major problem is that environmentalists have this incredible urge to "do something." So rather than just stopping the harm then need to take affirmative steps to "fix" the problem (usually by taking some dramatic step which does more harm than good). If you want to save the planet, stop destroying it and let it save itself. It seems to have done just fine before we humans decided to "make a difference," so perhaps some of us should put personal ambitions aside and think before we act.

it saddens me not only do i spearfish but line fish and deer stalk and i have the utmost love and respect for all living creatures we all need to stand up and be counted do not let bunny huggers and burocrats ruin this planet by being narrow minded.

Guys I just heard about it!Is that for sure?!In what grounds are thet going to ban it?It is the most ecologic way of fishing!

The greens will stop only at world domination, sorry that should read, world-dictatorship.
Perhaps the day of the dewy-eyed bunny huggers is coming to an end. Better to eat bunny than starve...........

Try not to mistake radicals and fundamentalists for the norm, whether it's political, cultural, religious, etc.
I proudly say I'm an environmentalist as I love nature and what that word means (ie: we eat things-things die-I want to be responsible for my own food as much as possible), and I kill my own fish than you very much. PETA/ALF and other idiotic organizations are radicals- you and I are certainly not them. But if you go and hunt your own food I'd put you on the spectrum of an environmentalist as you are avoiding the ridiculous machine that generally supplies us with food in plastic wrappers. A very tenuous and dangerous machine I might add.
From the looks of it, the EU proposal will define to a higher degree and allow recreational spearfishing (last time I looked).
