Any news from New Orleans??

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
From what we've been able to glean from the news reports, Katrina dropped to a Force 4 before hitting land and actually landed slightly to the east of New Orleans. Though there is considerable flooding in the city, this wasn't the 28' doomsday storm surge that everyone was afraid of, more like 12-15. That's pretty bad but not enough to wipe out refineries and chemical plants that would turn the bowl of the city into a toxic soup that nobody can figure out how to clean up. So, bad as it is, it coulda bin woice!

I sent a PM to Mike Freeman yesterday, asking him to report in as soon as he can, we have a few other members down there too, let us know you're alright guys :) It looks pretty bad with reports of a couple of oil rigs adrift in the gulf

well Im alive. I took my family to Orlando for "vacation" :duh We took a direct hit with a 27' storm surge. The devestation is total...I am for the first time in my life homeless. My house is gone fromthe foundation up from the reports I have been able to get. Not sure if I have a home, marina or boat to return to but I DO HAVE my life, my wife and my beautiful son :)

When we are allowed to return it is expected to be gloom and doom. I was starting my senior year this past monday but I will probably sit out this semester, start the clean up, figure out how to pay the bills, and take it one day at a time.

Thanks to all concerned. I will try to stay in touch best I can but communication is very limited. I havent even been able to confirm the safety of all my loved ones yet.

Best of luck Mike - we are so sorry to hear about your loss! Please keep in touch with us when you can!

Mike, I cannot believe the images on tv from down there, looks pretty bad.
O'm glad to hear the few people I know down there are safe you included.

Take good care and keep us updated of your progress back home!

Mark

Hey Mikey!! :D
Good to hear from you :) Really ;)
Well I can relate to you in many ways and being alive is good, the house and boat can be rebuilt. Anyway cool to hear from you and if you want to talk about it give me a bell
Ali

Hi Mike,
I'm very sorry to hear that but I'm glad you and your family's ok. I hope your boat's ok, at least you would be able to earn some money with that, once everything settles down. Good luck and all the best to you.

Adrian

Mark, have you talked to Bill D and Al Walker? Im sure Al rode it out naked on top of city hall with a cooler of beer!

Hey Rigdvr and everyone else at DB!
Glad to hear that you're okay rigdvr. Currently I'm in Crystal River w/ my aunt and uncle. My parents stayed behind in Ocean Springs/ Biloxi ( my mum is a nurse and couldn't leave) and I just found out that they are alive. Thank God!! They said theat everything is just completely gone. :waterwork Our house is still standing, but is damaged.

Like you rigdvr, I just started school on Thursday in Long Beach, but from what I hear the school's gone. So might be staying w/ my aunt and uncle working for a few months.

But the important part is that everyone I know is safe. Hopefully that will be true for others.

Good luck everyone. :)

Man you're a sport Mike. I was thinking about you driving home today and how weird it was to hear from someone you know who just lost their residence while I had just a typical day. And here you are joking around.
Yes, you're right! Al's probably sitting on top of a roof top with a tall boy of Coooors Light, his favorite, I was worried about that rascal too. Extreme Fishing Charters is still a go because I talked to Tracey and he said Al was cool. Bill's cool too from what he said, his phone doesn't work but I didn't keep Tracey since he was getting one of his air-boats to go look for bodies.

Again, let us know if we can help, maybe we can start a Louisiana/Miss. disaster relief fund for the guys involved that lost a lot like you. I hope you get it figured out man. PM me if for some weird reason I can be of any help or call me if you want to chat, Mark

Standing by on ch. DB

Thanks Mark. I wont really know what to ask for help with till I get home. It was wierd to watch Jim Cantorie stand where my house used to be and there's nothing there but a slab. I live(d) very close to the Gulfport Grand Casino where he has been reporting from...yeah, the one on the highway:) Everything for the first 4 blocks from the beach is totally gone...and I live 1 block of the beach:(

Im going to take my beautiful, LIVING family to Disney tommorrow for a day of fun and smiles that I hope will help get us through the times to come.

The only thing I want right now is to hear from my brother who stayed as well as many of my boat captain friends who stayed with the boats and wondered why I left...staying never entered my mind when I watched this storm grow. Everytime I look into my one year olds eyes I know it wasnt even a choice. I hope they are all well.
Mike

Wow... really puts things into perspective.

And makes you realize that material possesion is, well, overrated.

I hope you'll restore things to the best, good luck!!

From what I heard from a friend of mine who stayed, my apartment in Gautier did not flood and is still there. I am very thankful. I know there is a lot of pain and suffering going on on the coast right now. Many people have lost their homes and more have been flooded out. My friend in Pascagoula had 5ft of water in his house and his sailboat is on an island. Thankfully everyone I know is alright and can rebuild.

Good luck everyone,
Jim Ragsdale

hey Echo
thanks for the report and good to know you still have your apartment.
best wishes to everyone out, from what i was watching on the news over the weekend 1000s of people have a very bad situation.

yeah let's hope!!! they were quicker pulling troops into Iraq then they were getting into New Orleans :vangry :vangry

That's so true! My city, Ocean Springs (right next to Biloxi) got adopted by the city of Chicago, IL to receive much needed supplies. We received about 4 semi-trucks loaded with water, food, and other supplies before any government agencies even arrived with help.

One a happy note, I got back into town last Friday and my house received very minor shingle damage and lost a small tree, but otherwise everything is perfect. My parents are perfectly. Even my college on the beach in Long Beach (west of Gulfport) plans on opening in October.

Thank goodness for the little things! :D

Came across this old thread and figured Id update it....wow, just reading it brings back the flood of emotion. Nickels college still isnt open and much of our coast is still utter destruction. There are no marinas with shorepower. The casinos are up and running but not much else has been done beachfront. 1/2 mile north of the beach is pretty normal but below that line.....

I ended up in Tennessee for 6 months or so after the storm, there was no where to stay on the coast. 100,000 dollar houses were selling for 3 times that cash. 500 dollar apartments that still stood were renting for 2 grand. Utter chaos.

The red cross was a joke, fema was a scapegoat, and the insurance companies I now hold in the same regard as child molestors.

Many here will never move forward, stuck in a time warp of sorts, others are better off than they were before the storm through hard work and a positive outlook I would like to think I fall in the latter of those groups.

It was very humbling to go from being a independant, self suffecient family to totally relying on aid from others. Friends helped out as did complete strangers. People came from all over to give of their time and skills to help clean and build while others looted the only possessions many of us had left. This definately brought out the best and worst in many people.

School has been put aside indefinately as the cost of rebuilding and replacing was dramatic, a new house further north was aquired, a beautiful daughter has completed our family and we are still here, going strong.

Thanks to all those who sent notes, offers, encouragement, or just kept us in your thoughts.
Mike Freeman
