Anybody got the much-hyped iPhone?

I'm thinking about getting one but would like to hear real-life stories about using it.

My mate got one from the states with a hack to use as Pay as you go but that got over written almost instantly by an apple software upgrade. Well that's what he gets for upgrading itunes :duh but very nice little thing from what I saw of it :)

Stephan I work for a company that help set up Iphones for Car Phone Warehouse customers. I'll let you know if I hear anything about difficulties etc.

What i've heard so far is that they're generally brilliant, though expensive. The £269 price is for the 4Gb model, not the 8Gb, and the internet is 2.5G, not 3G so it's a little slow. The ipod functionality is supposed to be better than an actual Ipod. You can only get it on the 02 network, they are supposed to be incredibly hard to unlock the sim and of course voids your warranty. So £269 for handset and minimum plan is £35 per month, contract is 18mths.

Cheers,
Ben

My brother is obsessed but currently holding off as we have crap signal for O2 in Cornwall

Other problems - the camera is only 2 megapixel, you can't send multimedia or picture text messages, the actual Ipod bit has too little memory, it doesn't have bluetooth and the internet connects via some odd thing that means it won't work in many hotspots

that's all hearsay but I've heard it a few times so there's probably some truth in it.

my main gripe is that O2 is basically a bit of a naff network... especially if you live in the sticks

I decided against one, but have used them in the US. Here in Germany the T-Mobile plans are way too many €€€€€€€€ (only 250MB of data for 50€/month) My friends in the US use a couple Gig of Data per month.

* They have the best web-browsing experience on a small screen there is. Hands down no competition.

* The Phone application is weak for power users. If you have more than 200 contacts in your address book and spend more than 2hrs per day on your mobile this is probably not the phone for you. Searching for people in the address book is weak, call log functionality is weak.

* The screen is fantastic! good contrast, hard surface that doesn't scratch easily, nice colors.

Personal preference issues:

* text input, I am faster doing T9 on my Sony Ericson for spelling out a website URL than I am using the on-screen keyboard. I find that pathetic. Also I couldn't find a way to adjust the alignment on the screen like the old Palms or Newton. Maybe with practice this would change.

* video playback, not that much storage for video not very flexible about which videos it will play. (need to be in the right resolutions, doesn't support certain audio tracks, subtitles didn't work for me) If you encode everything for it, it probably works better.

a few things to add about iphone.. i got one from my bro for my bday 2 months back..

pros:
* wifi is easy and fast, though hard to connect if wep protected. browsing any other way is too slow. safari browser is sweet
* zooming in with 2 fingers is sweet, especially while web browsing
* messaging in chat form is nice, though cannot send to multiple people

cons:
* pop email software sucks. web based emailing is ok though

pretty nice toy, but not practical if u want to get any work done on it. wish i could put some dive software on it. :)

Apparently the user interface specialists agree with me that the iPhone is difficult to text input on, though it is faster than your numeric keypad device. I agree with peacenluv cool device, great web browser for WiFi (though you could just get the iPod Touch if that is all you want to use it for). Not up for people who do serious work with their phones.

great web browser for WiFi (though you could just get the iPod Touch if that is all you want to use it for).

I had a play with an iPod Touch this morning - they rock! We were looking at YouTube at tv quality while it was streaming, absolutely brilliant. Of course there's no phone or camera, so it's horses for courses I guess.

just a note: the net (youtube, web browsing) is awesome if u have wifi, but when roaming around, the gprs doesn't really cut it.. and it doesn't have 3g as mentioned by bennyb so internet is slow when not in wifi hotspots..

although hard to believe, i may be wrong, but YOU CAN'T INSTALL SOFTWARE ON THEM! Forget opening an excel or word doc. forget Outlook and contact sinc for you PC.

I guess they're great if you're already a MAC guy, but I see 0% interaction for a PC user. I have a Windows Mobile HTC Wizard (Imate K-jam, Qtek 9100 i think, and others) its great and flexible.

But, that Iphone user interface IS incredible....

IMO The selling points for the iPhone really boil down to its beautiful interface and predecessor iPod popularity. Sure, the iPhone looks sexy, and if you are going for style you cannot beat it, but as far as functionality, PDA phones & blackberries have been doing everything that the iPhone glamorizes for the past few years. Although PDA phones may not have a built in 4/8gb hard drive or look as cool, they do have memory card slots allowing you match or exceed iPhone storage. They also have Wi-Fi, faster internet access (3g), GPS capability, document editing capability, media playback (movies/mp3's/ or even TV synced via windows vista), and can stream media directly from the internet. Personally, I think that the other options (Such as the AT&T Tilt) are better choices than the iPhone, especially for people that work on the go or need the flexibility to use programs not installed by the manufacturers. (Just my 2 cents)

The iPhone does look cool, no doubt. It doesn't work here in Estonia though and it probably won't for a while. Don't ask my why... but obviously no retailer has got the licence to sell it (not even Tele2).

I'll get a fancy W series Sony Ericsson instead.

For your information:
Since today you can buy the iPhone in Germany for 999 Euro without SIM-lock and without contract.
