Hypersquid,

You have a PM with information regarding the knives.

Cheers

Ivan

Personally I really like the Sporasub Snake.
It has a good comfortable handle and the anode really helps with corrosion.

I've had good luck with the Riffe knife. Its a nice size to wear on my forearm where I can get to it immediately, and I managed to cut a 3/32" stainless steel slip tip cable with the serrated edge of it in an emergency.

There may well be others just as good, but this just happens to be the one I've used for a few years.

I splurged and bought the riffe silencer. Im actually not that impressed with it. I wear it on my inside thigh, and the locking sheath makes it dangerously hard to release the knife with one hand. It also needed some sharpening straight out of the box...

If you gotta go with a riffe, Id recommend the "spearfishers knife" no locking mechanism to fuss with and its less expensive.

Look at the Pelaj Assassin. Really low profile and Titanium coated for great rust protection. Good knife for dispatching fish.

Lately I've been ussing a frost mora 760 knive. They cut like crazy for long time (they are build with proper sandvik SS), they are cheap (about 9$) and fit nicely on the knife pocket of my picasso suit.

You must rince the knive after each dive, If not it will show some surface rust (easy to wipe with steel wool)

The sheath need to be modify to be used on the tight, and to secure the knife. But is an easy job!

Now I want to modify the profile to get a stronger tip and serrations on the back.

Finally I'm not afraid to lose, scratch or break my knife... 9$

I use a Wenoka Titanium EZ-Lock Tanto blade ($30). I never rinse it and it never rusts. I should add that I usually gill my fish rather than brain them so it doesn't get too much use other than making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the boat. rofl

edit: I do gut my fish with it and it seems to hold an edge okay.

i you will listen to my advice, i have been diving 8 years teaching for 5. I have had many knives they all look good with ther go faster strips quick release buckles ect ect but the only thing they are good for are falling out!!!!!

2 knives i recomend, the best knives i have had is the most cheapest a steak knife stuck in a piece of hose pipe cable tied to weight belt or BCD if diving.

2nd is a knife made by OMER in a weightbelt webbins sheath for attaching to weightbelt BCD.

good thing about steak knife if you lose it just take another from the kitchen draw until wife kills ya.

For a freediving spearfisherman in particular, a knife can mean life or death.

In an emergency, I cut a 3/32" stainless steel cable with the serrated side of my Riffe knife. Will your steak knife do that?

if it wasn;t so bulky a UK Blue Tang would be my favorite. but right now I favor the Omer Flathunt. but they need a stronger sheath (mine cut throught the bottom of the sheath very quickly)

you never know pal, just because somebody says something doesnt mean its bull does it give it a go you wil be surprised, and as for the omer knife reply it didnt say it can only be strapped to a bc did i!! happy spearing 'Pal'

rydergrove:

Bill makes a VERY good point. the "DIR" style steak knives are very good for there intended purpose; cave lines, fishnet/line and the like. I have used them and still have one on one set of my kit. they do come up wanting when it comes to Steel cable.

you said "bc", freedivers don't wear one. a Diver has minutes to fix a problem, a Freediver seconds. Freediving and Scuba Diving equipment are two very different animals.

I've been freediving 14years, diving for 8 and teaching for 4 :)

My favorite is the "Green River" NZ utility knife now known as the "Back Stabber" . Probably not too good for despatching a fish but doesn`t need sharpening/cleaning cuts through most stuff you could get caught on and costs £10-£20 and comes in a variety of sizes

Update
I just got a CRKT Stiff Kiss and I am impressed with it, It has a partially serrated blade and is very low profile.
I am not sure that these are still in production but I am sure that if you look for one they are available.

Ive been impressed with many of the omer knives. One looks like it is made by the same company that makes Riffe knives. Exactly the same handle and sheath but a slightly different blade, I think it the mini stil? Ive had good results with it.
I ALWAYS carry a pair of cable cutters when rig dviving as well. we use cable for shooting line and the entaglement hazard is even greater since your diving into a maze of pipes. The knife will cut it but having a pair of cutters never hurt.

6 stainless wooden handle Steak knives 5 GBP for 6 in Tesco (5 GBP for 5 of the heavy all stainless ones). Worth considering. Might even work with the RA limpet sheath [see below].

The Pelaj product I have seen looks near identical to the Rob Allen shealth & knife (and is also made in SA I believe). I can highly recommend the Rob Allen Limpet sheath for flat knives ... elastic loops so it can't fall off, flat profile is unobtrussive & full knife coverage reduces snag risk. I currently use a cheap Taiwanese econo spearfishing flat knife (Oz name, sometimes called the Stringray) that is often available on ebay & from internet sites in the UK, OZ & USA [& I used a spring of 50lb mono fishing line as a lanyard!]. The Rob Allen knife, the Assegai, looks good & I am sure is quite wonderful ...but beyond my means esp. for an item that is easily lost; if you think you can hold on to it & budget allows probably as good as anything and better than most.

Even though I often carry a stringer that could be used as an iki spike, I prefer to use a sharp pointed knife. I think the Sporasub spider that Huan already mentioned is the ideal design if your budget allows (I'd hate to loose one though) & you dispatch fish via the gill plate ...in you go above & between the eyes, a shorter knife like the Omer Hunter might be safer. In a similar vein to the Spider, Imersion make a couple of less expensive spearo daggers that seem an excellent design.

The best selection I have seen yet in one place is on this forums on-line store: http://www.scubastore.com/shop.asp?id_familia=1&id_subfamilia=7

apnea.co.uk have several including Omer products too (check reviews on this forum first though). I have noticed similar products are sold by different companies (perhaps sourced from the same manufacturer or perhaps inferior copies? e.g. see if you can find a Riffe like knife on the above link, I have owned 2 different knives shown on that link but with different branding) so you may want to shop around.

Following some advice I got from serious deep wreck divers I buy cheap knives. They suggested this because you won't waste air chasing after a cheap knife. I sharpen them myself. Usually I go for whatever is at the bottom of the bargain bin at the dive shop. If it needs serrations I use a dremel tool to add them. A little bit of silicon spray before the dive keeps the rust away.

Following more advice I also carry a pair of surgical sheers. The good ones that will cut through a penny are usually about $10 USD. Often times they come with a simple nylon sheath. I recently found some partially serrated, titanium coated ones at the supermarket for $7 USD.

All said I spend less than $30 USD to chop, saw and cut. Above all I don't care if I lose any of the above and so won't waste time or air chasing expensive toys to the bottom.
