Hi, I use a float, floatline, speargun configuration -- which seems common in the UK. Do any of the UK spearos use a reel? If so, what are the pros & cons. The most obvious cons to me seem to reel line mess, tangles around rock, self tangles,...

How & when is the line released (when the spear is fired/manually once the fish is shot/by the fish pulling/...)? Does it increase the shooting range of the speargun (by effecting providing a very long spear line --like a 100 wraps!).

Reels are mainly used in the med when diving for grouper.
Dive deep spear a fish, can't pull it out of the hole? no problem release the reel and head for the surface.
IMHO, reels are a pain in the asre here and are not needed unless you are trying to rid the area of congers
Portinfer uses one in Jersey but he is the only one that I know of.
2 wraps of shooting line will allow most euroguns to shoot to their maximum range.
