I was looking at the course at a local pool and thought it would be very helpful towards freediving.

I was just wondering if anyone has done it before? I think its the Red Cross program.

They have some decent prerequisites....

Prerequisite: Individuals must be 15 years old by last date of class; swim 500 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick; 100 yards breaststroke; 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and/or breaststroke. The last 200 yards may be mixture of front crawl or breaststroke, dive a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pond object and return it to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point.

Now that I found those it doesn't seem that difficult. I was more wondering if that 500 Yard swim is timed. I bet I would be able to do all of that stuff its just I want to make sure I do it correctly :D.

Any thoughts welcome :)

Thanks,
Morg

It's definitely worth it...if not for the dating potential alone! It's great info that everyone should know. I was a guard for 6 years and loved it, though the skills have come in handy off the job a number of times as well. I'd say take the course have a ball, become a better dive buddy, and grab a few phone #'s while you're at it.

Ah thanks a lot Matt, I'm pretty much sold on the thought now. My father was also a guard for a bit.

Who did you get certified with? (I am assuming Life Guarding has a general course like PADI or something... Red Cross or something correct?)

I am just wondering if this is a good course to take and is recongized :).

Thanks again,
Morg

I went through the Red Cross as well and got my standard certification...I went back later and got my waterfront certification as well. I believe the Red Cross course is the standard in the US, I think there are other options but this seems to be the most widespread.

Ah great thanks again,

I'm going to the pool tonight and I'm gonna ask them how I sign up :).

When I was in high school (which was when they still plowed by horse and we sparked):) our phy ed teacher graded our pool time with the red cross standard for life guards. It was a blast I dont think anyone didnt pass it was one part of phy ed i looked foward to every day. we all had a great time.

Hey Morg! I just have to pitch in, it's a great course, teaches you lots of aquatic safety and also how to watch a pool, it's a great job (though you'll have to take some instructor's classes before you're hired with a city pool) and you meet great (physically fit ;) ) ppl! You'll likely need your Bronze Cross, and the NLS program is through the National Lifesaving Society. Red Cross teaches all the other classes (like swim kids all the way to bronze cross, then the Water Safety (WSI) and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) courses.
You'll also probably need your AEC (Aquatic Emergency Care).

Willer, that brings back fond memories. For one sim, our instructor asked who wasn't grossed out easy- I put up my hand and I got to the be the victim "puking" during AR. rofl
