I might have chance to go to Southern Brittany in Mid October. Pekka has shown me a French spearo DVD with plenty of fish in it but it was all done from a boat.

Does anyone know where I could try some shore dives? Are there any regualtions/licences I need to worry about?

Cheers for any help.

Many moons ago I fished the area around Roscoff which was almost identical to conditions/fish species found in Devon/Cornwall. Lots of people spearfish here though so Bass are much warier! There are very good shops for spearguns etc. in the town of Quimper but not sure how near it is to where you will be. I dived without any paperwork so not sure what you need on that front.

Jez,

I started in Brittany 7 years ago, fish numbers seriously depleted, every man and his dog own a marc valentin....it's a religion over there.
You need a boat as shore delivers wrasse only, hence the 'vielle d'or' competition in Erquy. We've a 5m rib that we use extetensively, travelling 20 km off shore.
It's illegal to spear with a bottle, as it's considered cheating.....and it should be, though we won't go there. Plenty of Americans and one 'know it all forum geek' from Ireland can get faily abrasive when trying to defend the 'lard arses' version of the sport.
Also rules for collecting scallops that's pretty tough. You get 30 mins on specific days at low tides, with a max of 30 scallops. Coast Guards regularly check. You can lose your boast and all equipment if caught absing rules.

You will need to provide proof of insurance when spearing.
Abrasive, hmmm I like it, kind of Barnacle like?

Damn I was tempted to go to Brittany spearing but if it is all over fished I might stay here.... Perhaps you get more diverse species ?

Here we mainly get bass, bass and more bass (and recently porbeagle )

Anyway Brittany is a large place - I think that the south around Morbihan might be good ?

How about dentex / bream ? Any around or are they all more south ?

(Think I might stop posting before I get a rep as a 'forum geek' too... Maybe getting and passing on knowledge is too addictive ?! Education and learning... hmmm)

Hi, if u want some information about spearfishing in france, visit A la chasse sous-marine

You will need to get a paper at the "bureau des affaires maritimes". It's a free declaration but make sure you have insurance and bring the papers to proove it.
