I was reading about that on another board. I wondered if it happened out of the water and it came back and got him. Or he is covering. Bouncing off a rock seems pretty....fishy...
 
I caught a glimpse of the x-ray on TV but missed the article, so glad to see a bit more info.

There is an old thread on the forum (DeeperBlue.com) that includes some reports of spearing accidents. From what I recall, a lot of them involved short guns (if you think about it, it'd be pretty hard - but not impossible - to point even a 90cm gun at yourself & reach the trigger) and/or being out of the water (often leaving the water).

If you look at youtube, there are several videos of...misguided youths...firing spear guns on land. They usually end up suffering Darwinian injuries - I guess it makes the videos interesting. One guy was surprised by the recoil which drove the spear gun handle back hard & hit him in the head. I think another had the spear rebound at him on the stretch of the spear line. I think another had the spear line break. Yet another showed a youth with a trident through his hand. Ooch.

I guess the old adages still apply: Never load out of the water. Unload before leaving the water. Don't rely on the safety catch - only slack bands (i.e. unloaded) are safe.

There was a case, not long ago, of young man using a speargun to fend of some local hoodlums (from Reading?) that he'd upset. When they arrived at his house (in rural Berkshire or Hampshire, I think). He speared one in the head/face. He got let off, apparently the courts found that the intruders had planned to do something similar or worse to him. Not recommended.

Sorry strangelove, I did a half a$$ search to see if anyone had posted about it but was unable to find one. Im thinking the same thing about the friend shooting him. Seems hard to believe that a shaft could travel a path such as one that could send it back into his own head underwater.

i dont think the spear rebounded seem s impossible.. maybe his buddy accidentally shot him.... safe diving guys
 
saw the article in our local paper in SA a while ago and tried to scan it in and post it with no luck... I also thought perhaps he'd been playing with it on land. The murky water buddy shot story also seems likely...

In the article here he's quoted as saying he's never going to spear again. Not surprised, really...
