thinking of going to monterey or carmel next weekend, hoping that the swell will be down. just looking for any recomendations of spots for good hunting and dives with good vis.
thanks

my wife and i dove at carmel from stillwater cove this past weekend. first time using our inflatable, with no motor so we rowed. outside the rock the visibility was great once you were down 10 feet, we could probably see 15- 20 feet. shot 6 big blue and olive rockfish and a just legal 26" lingcod. we dove on the edge of the reef in about 25-45' of water. had some curious seals and an otter come close and check us out.
This was the first time diving south of monterey besides all the way down in san diego. carmel seems like it has a lot of good diving though. not fond of the $9.25 entry fee at 17-mile drive, maybe whe i get a motor for the inflatable we can launch somewhere else and avoid that, but then i would be paying for gas for the inflatable...hmmm. couldn't get the wife to takle a shot at a fish but at least she was in the water and enjoying it.

i guess i will throw my two cents out about my new gun. its an beuchat arka 75, very affordable gun. i re rigged it with mono and a homemade bungee. so far a very accurate gun, with great range, i shot several rockfish at 3 meters easy. i also like the tahitian shaft, much thinner shaft diameter and tip profile. its a big difference from my ab biller shaft and tip, makes a much smaller and neater hole in the fish. after shooting the gun and talking to sickbugs i decided not to try to add another band to the gun. it had plenty of power and he mentioned that his friend who added a second band to an arka said the trigger mech wore out.
i might replace the existing set of bands with a circular band with a cable wishbone when they wear out. does anyone have any idea how long i should make the circular band? just as long as the set of bands that is on now?

Very nice trip report. Is the 17 mile drive a toll road, or is it some kind of beach or launch area? Where do you usually dive?

yes, i think it was about $9, which is kind of ridiculous, but you pay to get into a state park or some other beach areas. the stillwater cove coastal access is pretty nice, a nice sandy beach, easy entry. the swim to the rocks, where i guess most of the good diving is, is pretty far, so we used an inflatable and rowed it. i haven't dove too many places near monterey, coral st., lovers. i go north most of the time to the sonoma coast.

We were at Carmel River State Beach at the river mouth yesterday. It was a warm beautiful sunny day. Visibility was about 12 feet. The ocean had less than 2 foot swells and was really not noticeable. We stay until about 3:30pm. A lot of Rockfish: Olives, Blues, Blacks. We were freediving. Deeper some got Vermilions. We were at Garrapata State Park in the morning with better conditions. There was a lot of kelp. I noticed that rocky areas that are normally filled in and covered over with sand after the winter storms now has sea grass and kelp. I wonder why the sand was not redeposited this year?
