Hello from Sarasota, FL. I'm an older guy with two boys, age 10 & 12, both PADI Jr. Certified bubble blowers, and I started so long ago I'm embarrassed to say, but lets just say Cousteau was young and I was too. I used to spear a bit for dinner, nothing more, but moved to Colorado. Back in Florida now for 5 years, looking for 3 kayaks for myself and the boys. Have spent a bunch of time researching kayaks best suited for diving. There seem to be a lot of good boats out there, and had narrowed it down to a couple, when along comes a new model from Ocean Kayak, the "Peakaboo." This boat will carry 400+ pounds, has a huge rear tank well, and has a plexi-glass window in the floor, right where it needs to be to see the bottom, about the perfect size, and is replaceable if it gets scratched. I am looking for a boat to hunt lobsters from, in shallow water, and this seems perfect. It will probably paddle like a pig, being 12' and 34inches wide. Anyone have any experience with this new model? Thanks

hello cubscoutdad,

I think that it would work excellent, and they make them full plexi bottom too, a bit high maintenance in that they tend to scratch up a bit.
I had a 12' ghenoe that I convrted to a spearfish "skiff" (wkend project with my 14 yo), the point I'm getting to is that you may ultimately want to switch over to some type of power, and with the kids and gear a small "inflatable" might be the better deal

my 2 cents

My dad lives in Bradenton. He did a lot of searching for a yak. Something that helpped him determine the style and features he wanted was to go to Economy Tackle in Sarasota. They have a trial day like once a month where you can test their different yaks. Eventually he found one that he liked, used. It's designed for diving, with plenty of water tight storage. He uses it to fish and really likes it. I've used it a little and it paddles easy.

One thing about the glass bottoms. He thought about getting one. But his fear was the sand on the beach and the oyster bars, he thought the glass bottom would just get all scratched up.

He goes out with a group just for a paddle pretty much every friday I guess. Then random fishing runs on his own.

There is a guy in Venice that yaks off the beach and goes out for teeth. Sometimes even a mile out to the good beds.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input. Have been there done that with Economy Tackle. They are not a dealer for Ocean Kayak anymore. The plexi-glass panel in this new boat is recessed to help prevent scratching, is coated with some type of scratch-resistant coating, and is designed to be replaceable for about $100. Having caught a few bugs in my day while snorkeling in the flats of the Keys, the see-through nature of the floor compartment (about 2 feet x 1 foot) seems ideal for lobster hunting. No one in my area has this boat available to demo, so that's what I was trying to find out - how does it handle in the water. Thanks, Will

Welcome to DB, cubscoutdad. Great to see another Sarasotan on the forums.

Sorry, can't help you on the yak, but if you are interested in freediving, I train at Arlington pool 3-4 days a week in the pm, even do some real diving every so often.

Thanks. I have a long ways to go to get back into hunting condition. I recently discovered the new HealthPlex on Clark, near I-75, and have started swimming there. Awesome facility, 6 months old. Will probably get that new kayak in the next month or so. Thanks, Will

hi there
I used to have a glass bottom kayak as well, sold it a couple of months back. If the sun is in the right direction you can see through it, otherwise its just like a mirror (bit embarrassing really)
