There's a pool based comp in Taupo, New Zealand this weekend. Some of the best NZ and Australia have to offer will be there, expect to see some National records tumble.

Would be great if those competing could keep us updated on how things progress. Hopefully Wal or Andy can send me a text message too, cause i'll be away from the laptop in Old Zealand having a Danish :p

Cheers,
Ben

Hi, An Awesome two days.

Here's some results in the mean time.
Suzy Kensington 161 DYN New Zealand Record.
Walter Steyn 187m DYN Australian Record.
Lisa Egan 108m DYN Australian Record.
More new National records in dynamic no fins to. Overall alot of personal bests, including myself.:)
Mind blowing performances, with
one dynamic heat having all three dives over 170m+ !!!

Sorry I'm a bit vague, but I don't have the official results.
Full results will be available here soon:

Weather was fantastic both days, the Taupo AC Baths setup was a very relaxing venue, with two outdoor heated pools and one indoor 25m pool

Thanks for the update and the photos Gavin.

Well done Lisa and Wal - Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!

Sounds like a very high quality field of play, congrats to all that took part.

Andy - congrats on the big PB in DYN too, that's a huge jump!

Cheers,
Ben

Take a look at page 7 - heat 2 of the mens dynamics (with fins).

I wonder if there's ever been that quality / consistancy of performance in a heat of a national competition before. 175 and 176 metre performances 2nd and 3rd and not getting through to the final.... depressing thought for us 100m mortals.

It was impressive to watch though. Some great performances through the comp - a number of PB's, new New Zealand and Australian national records etc. Weather was awesome (almost too hot at times) and the organisation & safety was really well oiled. Met some great people and learnt a lot as well. Kudos!

As far as I know altitude trainings in most sports, definitely effects positive way to athlete's performans like getting high myoglobin concentration,..So, how about this comp.., is there any changes for the personel results? Is it more difficult or easy to compete..? Maybe altitude in this comp.. wasn't that too much!!
Cheers,
Burak

I've got footage of most of the heats and finals and will try to find somewhere to host it. ....any ideas welcome.

Amazing to watch a heat(unofficial final) where two of the three athletes didn't go to the final with performances of 175m or more!! It was in a tough pool as well as it was only 1.2m deep.

Full credit to Fran Rose who organised the comp as it was fantastic. If calm athletes is a sign of a well organised comp(I think it is) then this was a perfect comp.

Burak - If I understand you correctly I think you have it the wrong way round as competing at altitude is harder not easier. Not many 100m sprint PBs on the top of Everest :) ....training at altitude and competing at sea level, now that's a whole different thing

.....any thoughts on how detrimental being 1000ft above sea level would have been to the performances....if at all?

Hi Andy, sorry for the misunderstanding, I didn't say it is easier to compete at altitude,,, of course lack of O2 gives hard times to athletes when they r competing at altitude..But, we r talkin about high altitude, u think 1000 feet is enough for this term..??!!!! Also, all I wanted to learn is, in this comp, what was the differences PB's of divers..Did they get too much differences their PB's in negative way, if u compare with their sea level results?

Cheers,
Burak

I see what you mean...:) Strangely in dynamic there were lot's of PBs whereas in static most (not all) were a fair bit off their best and recent training performances. There was one athlete that did 9mins plus in static with a previous PB of around 6mins but that was a demo thing after the comp had finished and involved getting the paramedics to give up some of their O2:naughty

Hi Andy
The air speed indicator on an airplane is proportional to air density and the old rule of thumb is 2%/1000 ft. Density is a combination of temperature, humidity and pressure, so on a warm summer day it's probably a little more in theory. I've tried doing tables at 5-7000 ft a dozen times or so and there is a noticeable difference.
That must have been some meet, very impressive.

Aloha
Bill
