I’ve been meaning to try the apnea hiking that Eric and Tyler raved about some time ago and finally got my act together at lunch time today. The problem I was faced with was that I don’t have the Canadian Alps at my doorstep in the Sydney CBD and only have access to but a few gentle hills…….. Unperturbed I took to the office fire stairs instead. :) Here are my hints for others of you that might be considering trying it yourself:

1. Don’t go at lunchtime as the stairs and lifts have heavy traffic at those times
2. Avoid wearing double(French cuffs) as they gather huge quantities of muck from dust gathering handrails
3. Prepare for a different climate peculiar to office fire escapes (lots of concrete/no aircon)
4. take tight corners as doors fly open without warning
5. Pick the right number of flights of stairs so that the lift ride down works in with some of your rests
6. Be prepared for strange looks (I’m use to this from statics on peak hour ferries- but that's another story!)

All in all I feel I stole a training session today and was back at my desk in 30mins and all I changed was my shoes…..and maybe a little deodorant

G'day Andy

Statics on the ferry. Running stair wells at lunch hour. You make me feel guilty. We spent lunch time nibbling brie and fresh papaya on the beach, after our training session. Water is 25 and rising. We're waiting for the rest of the 'foreign' diver invasion.

Aloha
Bill

Damn....I know what training I'd rather be doing......9 more sleeps and I'm on my way to your shores....save some brie for me!

btw - Bill, how is your training progressing?

All things considered, I can't complain. It looks like close to 90%, but very erratic. First static in over four months last week was 6:45 with nothing left in the tank and yesterday was a 6:25 samba demo (just couldn't relax). Interestingly, with a jumpy leg, hard to notice above water, a few good twitches and a few seconds loss of control, I managed the exit procedure and kept the airway clear. The 55 CB didn't feel very good, but when the sinuses are working, I can pull to the bottom of the short rope.
The 'girls' are going to be awesome if they keep progressing. In case you've been training real hard, they put a new rope in 85+.
Even if I finish last and all my records are broken, I'm going to enjoy this month.
Aloha
Bill
