THE 'Old Man Dave' Fish of the Month, Specimen Hunt and
'Crustacean Cup' COMPETITIONS 2013

This year the OMD FOM trophy will be a beautifully shaped trophy with the name of the winner engraved. These are hand-made by our very own spearo MIRROR [send him some rep!], with the kind help of venturesports/spearfishingstore.co.uk who will sponsor a prize at the end of the year.

We will run the Fish of the Month [FOM] in the same way as previous years; we will also run a separate Specimen Hunt [SH] competition over the course of the year.

In this thread, please only post your entries for the FOM competition.

Comments can be posted here - FOM/SH discussion thread for 2013

The poll will be added on the 1st of each following month and will run for five days.

Please read the rules below before posting an entry.

FOM Rules:
1. The entrant must have posted five times at, or before, the last day of the previous month to the current competition.
2. Entries to be accompanied by a photo containing a newspaper or magazine dated on the day of the catch; the date is to be clearly legible.
3. All legal species are included, local minimum size limits should be observed.
4. Entries must be posted by 09:00 on the first day of the following month of the competition.
5. Winners will be chosen by a poll. In the event of a draw the first entry posted will be declared the winner.
6. Voting will last for five days after the poll opens.
7. Multiple entries are allowed, but only one entry per person can be forwarded for the poll.
8. More than twenty entries will be shortlisted to twenty by the db staff.
9. Catches to be weighed in pounds and ounces.
10. The FOM & SH will run from March to October, inclusive.
11. All decisions made by db staff are final.

Specimen Hunt [SH] additional rules:
12. The winner of the specimen hunt competition will be the spearo with the most percentage points accumulated over the year. Details of how points will be awarded are given below.
13. To enter the SH, the fish should be entered in the FOM as above, and it should be clearly stated that the fish is also for entry into the Specimen Hunt.
14. ONLY the fish species given in the table below, which meet the minimum size requirements given in the table, may be counted in the SH: 16 species to try for.
15. In the case of a draw, a poll will be run to decide the winner by public vote.
16. SH Points are awarded as follows:
fish #% = [a X d] + b ['a' multiplied by 'd' then add 'b']
score % = (fish X% + fish Y% + fish Z% + etc) / number of fish of that species entered:
a: % points for fish weight as a percent of the "Specimen Fish Weight"
b: % points for catch report [awarded at the discretion of the DB staff].
d : multiplier: the first fish of a species entered is worth 1 x the above 'fish #%' points; subsequent fish of the same species added to the SH may be counted but will be subject to a multiplier of x 0.7 . These will then be averaged with the first fish score to produce the % score for that specimen.
Please note the larger minimum size requirements given in the SH table.
Please note that a good catch report/contribution on the forum will be rewarded as part 'b' above.

On holiday in Jersey and went out with some spearo's from club Apnea.... stumbled upon this Top knot... UK spearing record is 13oz and mine was 8oz. Vis was 5 meters and temp was 9 degrees and was at about 5.5 meters. Day time caught.

Bass 7lb 6oz (night dive in poor vis) entered for FOM and the specci comp please.

Hit the jurrasic coast last night looking fir a mamouth of a bass.
Vis was 0-5 meters abd very patchy..mostly vis was 2m.

Didn't start off to well with only lobsters in the bag between the 3 of us. But we pushed on through the murk for 2 miles with numb hands and feet leaving a slick of urine behind us.

Got to the end if the beach and my torch caught a glimpse of silver. ....could it be??? I took the torch off the fish and followed it slowly until it disappeared :(....so I swam in the direction it went until I spotted it again crusing a sandbar, I lined up, waited, and followed very very slowly. ...then it turned ready to bolt.....boom!!!!!! Perfect picasso shot just behind the gill plate dead center....gotta love my new gun.

5lb on the money grey mullet.
For the specci comp please.

Jumped in nr Weymouth with my buddy Alan for a night dive 9pm -1:30am.
I nailed a 4lb mullet within 2 mins, promtly followed by Alan with one of a similar size. Unfortunately he lost hus screw on spear tip in the process, so I gave him my back up gun......bad move as I snaped my speartip off after hitting a mullet pretty much seconds after. Oh well....so I loaded up with no spear tip and we continued. Surrounded by mullet we were picky and only picked off the 4lb plus fish. My blunt flopperless spear outfished Alan as I cud very quickly remove the spear from fish and string it up!!!!! The only diwnside was that I had to get clear headshots on all my donkey's; which I somehow managed without missing or losing a single fish.

Best mullet was bang on 5lb with all others very close in size.

1.42kg ( 3lb 2oz) Plaice for Species competition. Great dive with JKS,Grant and Mark on Jerseys sunny south coast. I caught five nice plaice and a chancre. Vis was 6-7m.Water temp 10c. Kept on the move, Not cold at all...not even my fingers! Did approx 80 short dives in 2 1/2 hours, in max of 10m. Plenty of small spiders and a few chancres seen. found a small eyed about 6lb but left it alone. Only saw one small pollack (about 500g). No silver fish seen. Great to find a few flatties. :p

ENTRY FOR FOM and HALL OF FAME Small eyed Ray 9lb 8oz.

Another great dive with Grant. Sun was out, vis patchy approx 4-5m on the bottom . Temp 10c. Thought about trying for a early bass, but diverted to look for small eyed rays. Looking for one big enough to eat and to challenge the deeper Blue HOF record which stands at 7lb 10oz caught by JKS. Found a real nice one at 9lb 8oz but also saw over a dozen other reasonable ones in 8 -13m, most were around 6-7lb mark which all left to get bigger. Grant saw a mullet in the shallows (he hadn't even had chance to load his gun so didn't get a shot!) but he went on to catch another plaice. We also saw a few cuttle and rockies.
