Hi DB

Are there any differences between the Aqualung Micromask and Technisub Marina?

I checked out some pictures of both masks on the internet and they look to be the same.

Regards
Elias

Same mask as far as far as I can tell. I've been using a Marina for a couple of years now and love it. At one point I broke a strap buckle and contacted US Divers (Aqualung) and they sent me a replacement buckle off of a Micromask. The buckle worked perfectly, but the colors didn't quite match.

Thanks Jon

If read some good reviews on the mask and on monday ill head off to the local aqualung dealer to try it on.

I hope it will fit my face.

Regards
Elias

Aqualung and Technisub are just two different brands of the same company. Micromask is virtually identical to Marina. Better told it is the newer version of Marina. Marina was still assembled partially manually, and they had to do some minor changes in the technology for automating the process. The new product received the name Micromask, though you would have hard time to find any difference.

It is indeed an excellent mask. I own one since it was released, and just bought a second one lately for backup. A friend of mine sold his new one for 20€, so I could not resist the deal (new one costs typically over 60€). The mask did not fit his face.

As above - same thing. Mine say marina.

I found some free time today and went to aqualung and bought the mask. I was amazed by how low the internal volume is.

Mine is a Micromask

Fit seems good and my eyelashes dont touch the lens.

Ill try it in the water tomorow.

thanks again for the info

I like themv very low volume, just the silicon feels less soft/sticky than the older version technisub.

A great low volume mask is the sporasub instinct star (I think they reintroduced it again) very soft too

The Sporasub mystic is excellent too. Comparable volume to the micro - softer skirt. Peripheral vision is a bit less than the micro - a bit better than the alien - and nose space is nearly identical to the micro.

Fit seems good and my eyelashes dont touch the lens.

Hhaha, funny you should say that but I had prescription lenses (-1.75 for those of you who can image the thickness, about 2mm at outer edge) made for these and glued them INSIDE. So now they are closer.

I start to get eyelash touch after 30m or so, a good depth indicator and mask eq reminder!

Interesting! I wondered if you could pack script lenses in there. My correction is about twice that - but 1.75 is all I need under water - spheras do it off the shelf - but I use contacts with my micro. Maybe I'll send one in to get lenses.

go for it Fondi!

i struggled with the idea for far too long, then realized the little white envelopes that all optical lens blanks come in are about mask lens size. I got the pair made locally at a very simple opticians for 50US$ and glued them in. No regrets, gluing has some tricks I will pass on if you decide to try that route.
The mask has even lower internal volume now, i hardly eq it at all.

Is it true that the mask Technisub Marina (now Micromask) was originally developed specifically for military Special Forces?

How does the smooth edges of the silicone effect the use of the mask, I mean.. is it possible too feel that the "traditional" edge (that I assume makes more turbulence) in the top of the mask is gone.. I really like the idea about the smooth edge but I allready have a new Cressi Minima mask that "does the job" it has this edge that collects water/ makes turbulence.

When I´m doing my DNF, I sometimes feel like the mask almost rips of in the setoff and was thinking that the smoother edges on the Aqualung Micromask might solve the problem due to a lower drag??

I don't recommend any mask for dynamics. Use goggles instead. You do not need any mask in the pool. Besides the added drag, it only prohibits proper diving response.
