Hi, Just cracked the very basics of snorkeling, ie breathing! I now have a bouyancy issue. I need to start using fins, but I am too far out of the water to kick normally, let alone with fins. I am investing in a wieght belt with quick release buckle, but am considering ankle wieghts as well. Are they safe or am I wasting my money? Any suggestions or advice welcomed. Thanks, Wendy. (Daves wife)

Ankle weights are great especially for shallow water and surface swimming. Don't need a lot, a half lb on each ankle is fine but depends on youe fins. With old fashion jet fins they were so heavy you didn't need ankle weights but with modern light weight fins I find them essential.

They are safe provided you don't go silly and have massive weight on your ankles. They keep your head up in the water and enable you to swim with fins fully immersed.

Dave

PS I make my own for zero cost from roofing lead.

Probably not a good idea. If you just snorkel, you'll be better off with no weight and a high blade angle. Some fins act like ankle weights (negative buoyancy). Whether you are diving for depth or in the pool for distance, neck weights will usually help.
