Hi there,

I've recently moved to Arizona (Phoenix area)....is there anything out there? I haven't seemed to be able to find anything?

I've been to Phoenix a couple of times and the only (local) thing I could find was Lake Savaro (SP??). It was pretty dirty and not worth the effort. Talking to local divers it seems that they all drive down to Rocky Point (Mexico) to dive in the summer and go to San Diego for winter trips- about a 13 hour drive.

Good luck finding any other clear water in the area. Maybe take up mountain biking instead? There's a lot of nice biking/hiking trails in the area from what I remember.

Hi schwansa,

I'm in Tucson. The lakes in Arizona are pretty bad for diving. I know people who have trekked up to lake Powell on the Utah border for scuba diving and had fun while they were there, but didn't ever go back. My impression is that is was not really worth it and so I have not gone there myself.

I usually go to San Carlos in Sonora Mexico. It is a seasonal sea and conditions vary greatly throughout the year, but it can be very nice when conditions are right. The best time to go there is October, but the diving is usually warm and clear from July through early November. It is just that the weather tends to be best in October. If you hunt you will want to go at other times of the year when the water is colder. The big fish usually leave the area or go deep sometime in June when the water starts to warm.

San Carlos is a small resort town near Guaymas. It is about a 5.5 hour drive for me and I'm guessing about 7.5 to 8 hours depending on where in Phoenix you are leaving from. San Diego and LA are options also, but you will have to get a boat out to the islands for good diving. At least, I have not found any shore diving there that I thought was worth the drive.

The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa NM is within driving distance and may be worth a trip to check it out at least once. It is a nice place to go in June or July to escape the heat.

I hope this helps you. Feel free to PM me if you want more info on anything specific. If you are a freediver, please let me know. There aren't many freedivers in Arizona.

As far as clear water diving I live in the center of clear deep big lakes (havasu and mead and mohave, also the colorado river). The water is clear and cold and the best things to spear are carp and stripers. I'm new to this but I try to get out as much as I can. Ill keep you posted here in AZ and let you know about my success. Fish BEWARE!!!!
P.s and the dude that speared those stripers is a bad ass and knows whats up. I seen him on a few videos on youtube.

hey 98spearo

I live in Kingman. Am looking for a diving buddy to go spearfishing with and spent more time in the water. Are you looking for somebody to dive with?

yeah im always looking for people to dive with..I try to get in the water as much as possible. I usually shore dive and swim around the coves or run down the river. hit me up im wanting to spear some carp I use a polespear and freedive.

Hey! My first post on this site.
I live in Arizona, Bullhead City to be exact. I go freediving with a buddy at Lake mohave All the time. We're beginners but we've hit 50 feet deep already and have a blast after a month doing this.
I have a Hawaiian sling and and going to start spear fishing soon enough. I know there are people who spearfish and pull up lots of big fish here in the river and lakes. While diving I come across bass here and there, and I'll be on the lookout for good hunting spots from now on.

It was my understanding that spearing game fish in fresh water was illegal. Of course that dosent include carp... But striper? Not a game fish? Am i mistaken on the laws? Perhaps its legal in AZ?

Arizona is one of the only legal places to take gamefish by spear inland, and it is exclusively carp and stripers. -- And only along the colorado and its lakes.
