Hi guys,

I have only recently begun to dive in excess of 15ft for my spearfishing, as i found equalising very hard, and painfull. However i recently attended a short SCUBA course where they helped me progress through this, and now i think i have got it sorted :). However this was only in a pool (not very deep) and so pressure was not nearly what it would be in the sea, and now i have a question...

If i am to dive to 15-20ft and then equalise... when i need to surface, is equalising on the way up done in the same way as on the way down? This is possibly a very silly question, however, seeing as you ascend far more quickly than you decsend will the rapid change in pressure force pressure on the ears in the opposite way that it does on the desent?

i hope i have explained this clearly, but it is just that i have seen alot of clips online like this one ([ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jPpGIbw378]YouTube - grouper[/ame] and [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbBYQ0PPrk4]YouTube - Goliath gets a massage[/ame] ) where the guys can be clearly seen equalising on the way down, yet on the way up, they just seem to push off the bottom and fin up, without doing anything obvious in the way of equalising

Anything to help me would be brilliant :D

Cheers,
Huw.

A normal person with normal eustacian tubes - sinuses does not need to equalise on the way up. It is done by your ears without any need for you to do anything. (thats why the guyz on the videos just fin up without a care in the world)

Cheers

hi huw first of all are you doing valsalva or frenzel if valsalva try to learn the frenzel its quicker and more efficient at depth. Do a google for Frenzel it will teach you how to do it. If you dont know which one you are doing ,valsalva is simply pinch nose blow air but Frenzel is more complex.:)

As for ascending i dont need to equalize i dont know if over people need to:confused: .
