Going to be in the area for a couple of weeks with a fairly open itenerary in August. Hitting Mendo for abalone the 3rd week in August. Going to check out the Monterrey aquarium and hopefully hit the best snorkel/dive/spearing spots that Cali has to offer. I'd be looking for shore dives unless somebody has a good tip for any charters that cater to freedivers-or-even better, somebody who wants to hook up out there. My experience is really limited to the PNW and N. Cal but I'd love to hit up some of that clearer water to the south. Also, when do lobsters open?

Lobster doesn't open 'til around october 1st. I think the official opening day is the saturday before the first wednesday in oct. That's california for you! I don't know where else you plan on going, but mendo is great and Monterey/Carmel is usually very clear. For a california beach dive it doesn't get much better than that imo. If you go down to so cal I know the Peace dive boat outa Ventura does freediving spearing trips out to the channel islands for around $100 all day food included. But you'd have to check their schedule. If you make it down to the central coast I'd be happy to meet up and do some spearing.

Yeah, I guess the only reason I was hoping to figure something out for further south was lobsters and possibly some Yellowtail. Albacore is great as well. I seem to remember a pic of a spearo with an albie TUNA on the Cal regulations book '05. I have heard that you can get them out there but you probably need a boat right? Anybody know of a dive charter that would run out for Yellowtail and/or albacore in August. I'll probably just stick to trying to hook up with old buddies in OR for a hook and line gig for albacore. Man I wish I could ditch work forever and just fish and dive.rofl

Thanks for the name of the boat co. that goes to the Channels. I will definitely take a look at their schedule. Where are you at in central Cal? How deep do you usually go? What gun should I buy? I need a new one and I'm thinking the Rob Allen 120 based on a few recommendations I have had.

Fleedermouse,

In addition to the Peace dive boat - which is one of the best and most affordable, there is the Aquatica Welcome to Aquatica Charters, Los Angeles Harbor CA , both running freedive only spearing trips. The Aquatica does shark dives too!

Also there is Truth Aquatics, but I think they run mixed freedive and scuba which would not be as good for spearing. Haven't tried them.

Don't forget, August is a very good month for White Sea Bass in addition to Yellowtail.

You might try posting on Spearboard.com as well. Lots of So Cal spearos on line there.

David

P.S. If you do come to Monterey area and are looking for a weekend group to dive with drop me a post.

I Live in San Luis Obispo County and I dive from Big Sur to Santa Barbara Regularly. I usually dive from 30-60ft. I know of a charter out of the Monterey area that does albacore spearfishing and I think August is possible albie time. A speargun for California is a very broad question. I just bought a new gun for Yellowtail and white seabass from Poseidonsub, great guy based in SF that makes a wide array of super high quality guns at unbeatable prices. Metelin is his screename, hit him up

Kale.

Second on that recommendation for posidonsub. Great guns and super service.

Yes I checked out his site. Very beatiful work he does there. May be a little out of my range for me to get by this summer but we'll see.

I dive out of carmel/monterey all the way up to Fort Bragg *good abs* If you want somone to dive with let me know I am out every week conditions permiting....I would recommend a 110' but *shrugs* its everyones personal traits etc....I doubt you wont be happy from 100-120.
Look forward to see'n ya out in the cali sun!

*PS look on spearboard.com under the cali forum ..lots of members*
