The last time Austin Derry went diving with me, he shot a 56 pound white sea bass. He did it again today. Doesn't this kid have any imagination?
He and Mike Morgan and I went out to beat the bad weather that is supposed to be here Wednesday through Friday, and we sure did. It was glassy with hardly a breath of breeze all day. If only the sun had come out earlier, but I shouldn't be picky.
At the first stop the water looked a bit green, but doable. The temperature of 57 didn't look too inviting, but that's better than what I heard about a few days ago.
After lubing my suit, I sprayed some hot water in it to help me get the courage to put it on. I'm afraid I washed too much lube out, and then was too impatient trying to pull it on, and tore the seam attaching the lower leg to the upper. That was a real downer, but we wrapped some tape around my leg and I jumped in. It didn't leak too much.
Vis was maybe 12 feet. After about 20 minutes I heard Austin's special white sea bass whoop. Mike was near him and heading to help, so I kept on hunting before I froze to death.
Austin held his video camera in his left hand and his Wong 55" open track hybrid in the other, and actually got video of the shot. The the reel is seen spinning like mad, and finally he is being towed. Its pretty neat stuff. Then he handed to camera to Mike, who vidoed him pulling the fish up while it continued to fight weakly, and finally braining it. You don't often see a fish still struggling. It seems like the diver is always bringing up a fish after its dead, so this will be very nice for his production.
I got so cold that I beat Austin back to the boat. Mike said he boomed some that he didn't see. After some hot water down the suit and a Cliff Bar, I went back in and strangely was warmer, but the vis got bad rapidly, down to maybe 6 feet, so we moved on to another spot. Thew vis there was OK on the edge of the kelp, but horrible inside it. Finally we got cold, tired, and disgusted, and came home early.
At least this makes two trips in a row with fish on the boat, even if the second one wasn't mine. I like it.
BTW, Austin's fish had an old wound right behind the gill cover. That's the second one like that on my boat this year. Maybe some guys are taking long shots or using weak guns?
