Hi folks, I'll be on corsica island in early oktober. Mainly freediving, maybe some spearfishing.
I'm used to the islands of tuskany, which usually offer 20m of visibility, and 26°C in september.

How's the visibility on corsica? The western coast looks steep, rocky and quite interresting. How is the access to the shore? Can you drive/walk there or do you need a boat most of times?

Greets from munich!

I've been twice in September/October in Corsica, and it was very much all right. Few tourists (though many restaurants, hotels, shops, and other touristic established were already closed). Visibility very much depends on the actual weather and place, on the places I am used to dive, something like 10m-15m rather than 20m is more likely. The water was, I believe colder than 26°C, but still OK even without a suit for a while.

The western coast is definitely much more interesting and less touristic than the eastern one, but it usually gets more wind and waves from the open sea. On the other hand, there are so many bays, that I do not remember too many days when I wouldn't be able to go diving. You can certainly access many places by car or by feet, but having a boat or a kayak may be better suited if you want to find some remote places for hunting. My favorite place on Corsica is around Porto, with two breathtaking regions around: Capo Rosso on the south, and the marine reserve Scandola on north. You definitely need a boat for Scandola - it is huge and there is no access by car. Accessing it by feet with equipment is difficult and long (I believe the shortest distance from the road is 8km in a difficult terrain). Scandola is beautiful and with a lot of fish, but fishing and spearing is forbidden there.

There is a freediving club in Ajaccio: corsica @ APNEA.cz - you may find some interesting information on their website too

Thanks trux, i was really hoping for 20m vis but oh well....

Any steep dropoffs there?

Yes, plenty. On the west coast, you can often reach 20+ meters within few meters from the shore. There are also plenty of caverns everywhere, and some wrecks, if it interests you. More info for example in the book 50 épaves en Corse or also in [ame="http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2004-26%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=MES+PLUS+BELLES+PLONGEES+EN+CORSE&btnG=Search"]Mes 50 Plus Belles Plongées en Corse[/ame]

And you will certainly find many more if you browse the web. You may also try contacting some scuba diving clubs to see if they'd take you on a boat with them.

lol i have the book about the 50 wrecks, you bet i'll dive some of them )
did ya do some of the wrecks as well? can you recommend me some?

I'll go for the viking, definately, then the mario, this small tugboat lying in 6m.
As for the deeper stuff i was planning to do the 2P47 lying close to each other in 19m, then maybe the b17 at calvi @25m....ohhh the choice is great.

As it happens, I am also a plane buff, yepp i specially love the wwII prop planes.
