Has anyone dived or freedived in the Azores or Madeira? Any opinions or info to share? I am going there for work soon and need to research the diving scene a bit.

Thanks

Sam

Active member marginatus lives in the Azores, I have Holidayed there myself. Most beautiful scenery & fantastic food but I was more interested in fishing & surfing at the time so cant say much about freediving.

Yes, I live in the Azores. I live on Terceira. I love the spearfishing here, however I've never been anywhere else. So, I really don't have any room for comparison.

I spent two glorious weeks on the island of Pico last July. The water is very deep (hence all the whales) and I found great visability but the weather was very calm which helped. There is a hugwe amount of wildlife to swim with there - I swam with 4 different types of dolphin and saw a dozen or so sperm whales. On the last day I was there a blue whale was seen - I didn't see it sadly but what a fabulous place. My best dive out there was with bottle nosed and spotted dolphin which had created a huge fishball of makerel and I was in teh middle of it having these dolphin all around me and sheerwaters diving in from above. One of the most magical experiences of my life.

The island is amazing - the food to be honest not its greatest selling point but if you can time it well you may have a great time on land too - they have various festivals - I was there for the whaling festival at the end of July - what a party for a whole week.

These guys orgainse trips out to the dolphin - all local guys - very conservation minded there are some great skills there and some fabulous photographers. I will be going back its an amazing island.

I need to look at it actually from a scuba diving perspective - can anyone recommend the best/busiest scuba diving locations?

thanks for your help

Hi Sam!
I was doing some freediving and filming on the Azores a couple of years ago.
It is, as all the others have said, an amazing location!
I did only freediving when I was there, but the man who organised our dives with the whales and dolphins also runs a scuba diving facility.
Norberto is a great conservationist and guide. He is based in the island of Faial, which is just a short boat ride from magnificent Pico.

Faial however, in my opinion, was the nicest of all the islands. Great restaurants, nice people, and the world famous yachty harbour where you meet real seamen and women!
The freedivers on Faial are also a great bunch... can give you details if you'd like.
All the best,
Hanli

Hi Sam
the distance between Madeira and Azores are about 200 miles... and are very diferent in many aspects.
the option on Norberto Divers it seems to me be the best. you can take simple info from the local spearos in any of the islands. anyone can tell you about the hotest spots to dive or spearfishing. enjoy your holidays :)

Angra do heroismo is a nice freediving bay and the next bay down, I forget the name, was years ago.... on ilha treceira, don't know about madiera, cabo verde islands are a top spot for freediving but you'd need a good few weeks to explore those islands.....

I think Madiera and Azores are more like 500 nautical miles apart maybe even 800 no????

Enjoy those deep blue waters...

thanks guys and gals - this was a work thing and I've just heard someone else is going so I won't be there... but thanks anyway, it sounds worth a visit!

Hm, I wonder what smoking has to do with Azores :duh Why don't you better enter the word "smoking" into the search box above in the menu - you will find several threads speaking explicitly about it. If you still have questions or comments after reading the information, feel free to post them there. Here it is really completely off-topic. :)
