On Jan. 17 I had surgery for my prostate cancer, and was warned not to return to vigorous exercise too soon lest I tear open one of the six incisions. I've been walking the line between trying to regain some fitness and not doing damage. I've heard of several large white sea bass being taken, so yesterday I decided it was time to test my progress. I set out for the hot spot with Dam Nguyen, Joel Olenik, and Brandon Ward.
The visibility was at least decent, about 15 feet, and the temperature was a frigid 57°F. Those leaky seams that can't seem to be re-glued weren't that big of a deal at the end of the summer, but they were very noticeable yesterday. I need a new suit.
Not long after we got in the water, Joel called for me to come over. I thought he was going to show me some fish to shoot, but unfortunately he just wanted to show me the 52 pounder he had already shot and stoned. What a friend.
The kelp was pretty thin and we didn't see any more fish, so we moved to another spot. The kelp was thin there too, but Dam still managed to shoot a 60 pounder.
Then we went back to the first spot, and Dam scored again with a 55 pounder. The rest of us didn't see any. Its amazing how that guy has a 6th sense and can find fish when no one else can.
I found that I was in pretty poor condition, even for an old man of 73, and my breath holds were 45 seconds max. But it was nice to get the first post-surgery trip out of the way and just get in the water again.
BTW, Brandon can hold his breath for 3 minutes, and he still didn't get any fish. He'll have to come up with another excuse.
