Has anyone tried baiting a spot during a Spearfishing session? I was wondering if there is any merit in the idea of perhaps spearing something like a wrasse at the start of a session and anchoring it a good spot likely to attract both fish and crustaceans etc. Then go about hunting as normal and return to the spot near the end of the session to see what may have been lured in.... Unethical, or simply, does nothing like to eat wrasse and therefore a waste of time
and wrasse?!

Ethics aside, I can't see a dead wrasse attracting anything.

A mashed up bag of mackerel heads / guts / leftovers however, I'm sure would attract a few things. I'm pretty sure spearolee posted something about it in the Dorset thread ages ago. Attracted all sorts of beats apparently.

I'll look up that thread thanks, I dont think I'll ever find a use for wrasse other than as way of getting rid of expensive ragworm when fishing!

I have tried using squid heads and guts in a mesh bag and just chopping bits up with my knife to create a bit of a trail. Both times it brought in more reef fish to shoot than I would usually see. I'm going to try it again more regularly this year when the water warms up a bit!

I used a bag of mussels crashed with a hammer once - didn't make much of a difference
