Hi all! I'm Dave - long time lurker, new poster.

Doing a December Baja camp/dive trip, flying into Cabo on the 17th and out on the 26th. Tentative plan...go to Los Barilles and/or Ribera for 2-3 days, then La Paz for 2-3 days, then over to the pacific side (Todos Santos, Pescadero) to try that area. I'm renting a car, bringing a tent & camping stuff, planning to camp out mostly, hit up RV parks / campgrounds here and there to re-stock water. Maybe get an airbnb for a couple of nights. Planning shore dives with my shoreboard, unless I happen to find a charter or something that I can jump in on - hard to justify a whole charter just for myself.

I've been reading all threads I can find and scouting with Navionics & Google earth. Punta Arena looks really good on the charts, and Ribera & Los Barriles sound great, haven't really found much about La Paz for shore dives, same for Pacific side. Looks like there's some good points/cliffs that would lend themselves to good rock piles, but hard to tell how much there really is.

I've read that the winds can be kinda rough on the sea of cortez side this time of year - figure I'll just roll the dice, and if it looks like the wind's gonna suck, then just head over to the pacific side.

Not really going for anything super big / amazing - if I can find a couple fish to cook for dinner each day, I'll be pretty stoked about it

It would be a ton of fun to go out with someone, or even just meet up and have a drink and talk spearfishing, if anybody is gonna be around & would be game to meet up.

Any ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated!

happy diving,
dave

did you ever go on your trip?

Hey Dave! Sounds like an epic trip! Los Barriles and La Paz are great choices for shore dives, but you're right about the winds on the Sea of Cortez side it can get rough in December, so having the Pacific side as a backup plan is smart. I’d definitely check out Todos Santos for a few good spots and some chill time. If you need help organizing stuff, here’s a great article on planning trips https://gowithguide.com/blog/how-to-plan-a-trip-5-essential-steps-5730 Hope you find some fish to cook and maybe meet up with fellow divers! Safe travels!

Hey Dave, sounds like you’ve got an amazing trip planned! The mix of camping, diving, and exploring both sides of Baja is such a cool way to experience the area. Punta Arena is a great choice, and you’ll definitely find some good spots around Los Barriles for fish to cook up. The winds can be tricky this time of year on the Sea of Cortez side, but heading to the Pacific is a solid backup plan if it gets rough.

If you’re in La Paz, the dive shops there are usually pretty welcoming, and you might be able to hop on a charter last-minute if something opens up. The Pacific side is hit-or-miss for visibility, but the rocky areas near Todos Santos should give you a shot at some decent catches. It’s awesome that you’re keeping it laid-back—sounds like you’re all about the adventure, and that’s the best way to do it. Hope you have a great time, land some fish, and meet a few folks to share the experience with. Safe travels and happy diving!
