So we checked our sources and they said Friday was gonna be good...NOT....But this day was special in that I had the honor of inviting and hunting with a lengendary spearo (drummmm role....) Jack Kearns, for those of you who know Jack, little needs saying... for those of you who do not, he and Art Pinder were some of the first groundbreaking fathers (grandfathers now...no pun intended) of our sport, competing in over fifteen nationals, and placing over top 5 in most, at 70+ this man is rock solid, and still setting steel like the best of us!
So we headed out of Elliot at 1'ish pm to be greeted be some very cheerful whitecaps in the bay, yep we knew it was gonna be fun, especially since one of our crew had decided today we were going to test the "Banana Luck Theory"...it was a majority vote to allow the yellow, sweet, perfecto fruit onboard...as Capt. OVang hesitantly gave a a skeptical nod...and gunned on. Out thru Ceasar the wind was blowing 25+, and the 30' Cat showed no fear as we broke NE towards an infamous ledge, where countless 300+lb. pound goliath groupers had been shot back in the 1950's by the Kearn/Pinder bunch, with Hawaiin Slings nonetheless!...We made a stop short of the fish haven to warm up...40', 10' viz, 4-5' waves, and jellyfish convention in full force...not exactly ideal shootin' conditions but perfect, Banana proving theory conditions...we combed the ledge and managed a few hogs, go's and bugs ...all boarded, and luck still holding we moved on...to Jacks Hole! I should add in no- numbers, no GPS, just site and compass, Jack focused on the horizon and carefully looked over his shoulder as we all looked on in anticipation, somewhat skeptical I should add...finally Jack gave the word and the Capt calmed the Cats twin 300's "get your gears " Jack instructed with authority, and before you can say Banana Theory, 4 guns hit the water! We were on a 60-65' ledge that broke into finger ridges, we upped it to 5-6 footers, nearly T-B viz, not to many jellies....and did I mention abundant sea life?
