Bands brands and possible problems ????

Hi all,

My question is this :

Should you always use the same brand of bands as your speargun, for any reason ????

I have been using other than my speargun brands, I have a cressi and an omer. However, in my local shop i could only get sporasub bands.

My omer muzzle head failed on me, the bands kept twisting round and round whena bit tight and never got tight enough. So i took it in for repair.
Last night, i was trying some new sporasub bands on my cressi, which surprise surprise, started to twist when a bit tight round and round again.
So i thought to myself, great....another muzzle thread gone. :vangry :waterwork

Now, i must admit, if i compare the threads on the omer bands (the original pair i got with the gun) and the sporasub bands, the omer looks much more superior, and you can actually see that the threads of the omer bands are much bigger-higher than the sporasub bands.(sporasub threads are very flimsy)

What do you think ????

1. was I unlucke enough to buy sporasub bands from a problematic lot ?
2. Are sporasub bands like that ???
3. Should i stick with original manufacturer bands ???
4. Are my threads gone, or if i use original bands they will go in and tighten ok ???

and no. 5 . Should i take the sporasub bands back to the shop and hit the guy on the head with them :duh ???? (after that i will hit my head on the wall for chosing cheap products) Now i have discoverd the omer supplier in Cyprus i will only buy stuff from him.

Sounds like you sort of answered your own question. Spaghetti is a connoisseur of rubbers for Euro-guns you might want to search the forum for some of his existing posts on the subject. I seem to recall, shock, horror, that he actually rated French Dessault rubbers most highly. Alternatively, get a bulk-rubber muzzle like SA railguns . Actually, I seem to recall that Dessault offer bands for bulk-rubber muzzles too.

Hi All...

Took you some time to answer my question (since 2005 !!! )

I have since ''evolved'' as a spearo and i have cut the broken threads muzzles and made them ''open''. i now only use open heads and tie my own rubbers !!!

Thanks for the answer though. I think the problem is the sellers of spearo equipment here in Cyprus (Meditteranean) dont know nothing about the stuff they sell !!!! For instance , afew days ago i asked my frined to bring me an Omer head that would fit my OMER excalibur the one i mentioned in the first post, so that i could replace the old one as its a bit craked and also cut it to make it open (my gun uses the oldtype of heads that have both mail and female joints)

the shop owner send me a head for another model that he said it would fit but it didnt as the diameter (internal=25.5 mm and external was 32mm !!!!:head)

he also said he measured the internal diameter with the gauge and found it to be 28mm , perfect for my gun !!!! MY HAIRY ASS !!!!!(he is the OMER distribuor in cyprus :rcard:rcard:rcard)

Some of the suppliers here just dont care if you are not spending 100s of dollars for them.

on the other hand we found some good spearos-freedivers that run shops and made them our supply stores !!!!

Cressi have a slightly different thread to the 14mm on most euro guns so I would stick with cressi rubber for cressi guns.

Well, you didn't say that you were in a hurry. Yeah, we're slow readers, and we like to think things over before answeringrofl. And hey, at least I did answer! I enjoy your posts George, you should post more often.

The Italian guns look more fragile to me than, say, SA guns but you do see cheap spare parts around for them, in stores and on-line. For example, I have seen spare Cressi Comanche muzzles on-line and in a local store -- and pretty cheap too, I think around £4 (or maybe 6). I prefer robust reliability but cheap readily available parts is second best. Perhaps the Cressi muzzle would fit your Omer, I think 28mm external diameter is "standard" (but not universal) -- not sure if the SA muzzles would fit, it would be good if they did.

You might want to set up your location in your profile (as you've told us now anyway) as it provides some context for answering questions (e.g. stores, conditions, size of fish, temperatures) [As you can see, I am located in some bland generic EU state]
