Barracuda Hunting

Last weekend, i saw a scholl of baracuda, each one was the same size. Each one was araound 15kg or 20kg but i though that if i shoot one, others will attack the fish or me. My gun was 100 cm picasso with reel(50m rope). i canceled to shoot in my mind, and left that area. They were not small, i hunt middle size araound 2 kg's or 3kg's. Any Spearo who knows the technic to kill one of them? is it dangerous to shoot the hunter fishes like them?
if i see them 4 meters away, exact distance is what?

european barracudas are different species than ones in atlantic. European ones don't grow as big as 20kg. Probably you saw atlantic species i assume? I never heard anybody seeing that specie in med. sea :hmm

Maybe not 15 or 20, but exactly very big. i don't know how much water makes it bigger, but it was really big, they would have come from Red Sea or somewhere else. i before never see but this year. They were around 4 meters down from surface.

In Brazil the way to get the cudas is to go to bottom and wait, normally they will come to check you out from behind. Then just nail them. It is great hunting for them, they normally run away if you point your to it. Also try to hide your gun behind your body while fishing.

Stranglove,
Meanwhile, thanks for you information, I can't go the bottom, Let me first explain the place; the place is 200meters away from the cost, there is always current from east to the west at this area. All fish loves this are, i don't know the reason. Under this point, there is a big rock coming from bottom, botom deep -55 from surface, top of the rock -30 from surface, All Cudas turning around this area, i can't dive to -30m, i mean i can't go to the top of the rock, i also saw swordfish, dolpins, When they come, all fish flying to somehere else, That day, you see no wish until the next day, They all afraid from dolfins and sword and escaping from them, i don't know why, A very older fisher took me that area and said you can't imagine how many fish in this area, He said, no way to put a net, Current is a big problem, hunting is no problem, No shark but all others, For me -15m for hunting is ok, i think there is no any way to hunt in the current, they were not in the deep, i saw them from the surface of the water.

sounds like incredible place, is it in agean sea or med sea?

I would try just going down to around 10 meters , or the depth that you are kind on neutro , hide the gun behind my body, and wait.. I think the key for cuda hunting is to rely on their curiosity. This one think you may try , it may work or may not.

If the ones you mentioned are anything like the ones we see in the Redsea, your problems will start after you shoot. They tend to bite everything including the spear.
Just to mention a strange tech to finsih off a large Baracuda, is to break their spine against your knee. If you can get hold of their tail and the shaft!
In any case, next time try to shoot, the rush is awsom.

I try and shot them in the head for a kill shot.... but if not then it's gets all exciting! Here a couple from the Azores in 2003 (I didn't get the big one - Kevin got that).... laters, Clive.

Great Baracudas and nice pics. is it open water hunting? Can you write hunting techics?
