UK lobster, sea bass fisheries seek MSC stamp

Managers of two lobster and sea bass fisheries on the UK's Yorkshire coast are seeking certification under the Marine Stewardship Council sustianable fisheries guidelines.
The fisheries -- the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee lobster fishery on the Yorkshire coast between Staithes and Spurn Point, and the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee sea bass fishery on the Holderness Coast between Flamborogh Head Lighthouse and Spurn point -- are the first in North East England to seek MSC certification, and the first lobster and sea bass fisheries in Europe to do so.
The fisheries will now undergo detailed, independent scientific assessment against the MSC's environmental standard.
If they pass the assessment, the fisheries will be eligible to use the MSC's eco-label on seafood packaging.
"We believe that the assessment will raise the national and global profile of Yorkshire Coast fisheries with potential to open up new marketing opportunities for local fishermen," said David McCandless of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee (NESFC) in a press release.
A total of 12 fisheries worldwide have been certified to the MSC standard, and another 19 are currently under assessment.
