Anyone interested chime in!! I'm thinking about a winter meet in Prince Rupert! it'll be deep, dark and cold but will still be better then cutting a whole in the ice! if we time it right Ling Cod, Halibut and Rockfish will all be open. I'm willing to organize, but will need to know who's interested.

any information is greatly appreciated:

Charter Boats?
Lodging?
Prize for Biggest Ling Cod?
get some Teeshirts made?

would be a great chance for westcoast freedive spearos to meet and greet. there arn't many of us out here!

Thoughts?

Well, if I didn't have to work, I'd be interested . . . after I made a few additional purchases to upgrade my mere 5mm suit! Getting away in the winter, though, is tough. About the only time I could squeeze in might be the week after Christmas and even that's reeaaalllllyyyyyy iffy.

I've actually got a spearo'scuba trip happening in September at the south end of the island. Willer are you back by then?
But I'm in for a north end trip!
Cheers,
Erik Y.

I'll be guiding for most of september. South Van Island? didn;t think anything was open for spearing there anymore?

Rockfish, Greenling, sole, halibut I believe. No Ling on spear or hook at the south end unfortunately :(
5 day live-aboard, around 600$ Can. Can't beat it.

I should clarify that the trip I've organised has scubadivers who don't spear, and freedivers who do spear.

what dates were you thinking colin?, if I am able.....will come.

not quite sure on the dates - they'll be chopping up my knee agaiin this winter si I may not be able to dive anyways. when is good foor you folks. anyone know when the ling start breeding?

What kind of water we talking? I am not familair with the area but I am in Portland. I have an 8-7-6 tridensity full hooded one-piece suit. If this is warm enough I might be in for a trip like this. I am a beginner but plan on doing alot of training through the next 6 months.

not familiar with that kind of suit. Scuba Suit perhaps? I hated freediving in my old scuba wetsuit. I dive in a 6.5mm Omer, most folks I know have a 5mm suit.

it;s never warm :D

It's an xcel and a great freediving suit. That's what I bought it for. Sounds like it would be perfect for up there. The water is usually about 7-8 degrees here in Oregon and I never get even close to cold. Sounds like it should be OK for up there as well.

How about a prize for the biggest fish caught without a wetsuit! You'd have all of 6 minutes to catch the darn thing, then get out of the water fast!

I'd sponsor a bottle of rum for that contest :D

you should offer this to competitors before they dive so it keeps them warm :ko rofl

just curious. I'm from the Fraser Valley but live in the Amazon now. I'm going to Canada for 6 months in 2006 and was curious what sort of depths you need to dive for Rockfish and lingcod.I just freedive. (only for lack of opportunity to learn scuba)I'm not sure that I've been past 7 or 8m. Any chance of seeing nything at these depths?

most of the Ling and rockfish I see are 10m+. the bigger cod and rockfish seem to start at 20m. I have found greenling and flonder in water less then 10m. lots of things to see, but not much to hunt in the 0-10m range.

Tucunare,

I saw a good size ling cod at 7 m on the west coast in April. Though, as Colin pointed out most likely deeper as a general rule. I think particularly the yellow eye rockfish (red snapper) like to be quite deep even more so that the other rockfish species. Go out and try your luck at whatever depths you are going to dive, as you never know what you will see.
