I came across a paper (abstract only) by Engan, Jones, Ehrenberg and Schagatay (in press) that claimed that taking a dose of concentrated beetroot juice before static apnea extended times by about 10%. The abstract is here:
ScienceDirect.com - Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology - Acute dietary nitrate supplementation improves dry static apnea performance
This will be worth a look once the full text is available. It may be old hat to some, but rather than adding to this thread:
http://forums.deeperblue.com/general-freediving/64621-beetroot.html,
which went nowhere (possibly because it was in the wrong part of the forum), I thought I'd start afresh. I'm sure the original poster (Simon) was referring to the same work.
I wonder whether we'll have to split the STA discipline into static, no limits (SNL) and static, no beetroot (SNB)?
Paul.
