Im new here and new to the sport of spearfishing and am looking for some gear. I know that I need a mask, snorkel, and fins but don't know much past that. I will be spearfishing in lakes here around my house, and also some out of Orange Beach in the gulf of mexico. I was looking at the mako freediving package for about $200 that comes with mask, fins, boots, snorkel, weight belt, and dive knife but it is currently out of stock. Id like to hear some opinions on this package or other stuff that I could purchase for around the same price. Basically I'm looking for as much gear as possible for around or under $200. thanks in advance

well you need a lot of stuff

first you need a speargun :D
then you need fins and mask with snorkel
that basically covers it if the water is really warm

if you wanna do some serious fishing then this is what you will also need:
suit
belt + weights
ankle weights
knife
something to put the fish on/in after you catch them
fishing knife
good gloves

if you don't use a suit you don't need weights or maybe 2lbs or so, just to be negative

Thanks Killa, I think Ive got the mask, fins, and snorkel picked out, but as far as guns I was looking at the cressi comanche for about $100 to get me started. Any opinions on it are welcome, and also for nearshore diving for flounder, sheepshead, and snapper, and occasionally in freshwater lakes would i be better off with a 75 or 90 cm? I was thinking get the 75 now to learn on and use in shallow water then maybe later getting a larger gun for offshore after I get better at freediving and get certified for scuba.

Just because we're at it (kits and all-in-one packages) here's some interesting stuff (especially for the wetsuits). Add postage about 50 Euro for USA and 30 for Europe. Package : Tutto Pesca Mare

If you're on a budget, you can do w/o ankle weights (I don't use any).

+ Diver-down float (cheap torpedo float with built in diver down flag works fine and is v.convenient),

+ float line. Fish stringer to hold speared fish - spike can also be used to dispatch fish. You can get waist stringers (cuttable mono or cord) or float stringers (can be steel wire, mono, cord, ...) - float stringer is probably simplest and safest to start with.
